Yes this type of thing has been mentioned before. It's usually refered to by Stanford's name of <A HREF="http://graphics.stanford.edu/projects/brookgpu/" target="_new">BROOK Processing or BROOK GPU</A>.

There is alot of potential in it, but having Blade servers of graphics cards like many of us envisioned doesn't seem like it's likely use.
