At what point does the CPU become a bottleneck for the x800? I have a 2600XP on a MSI k7n2 delta-ISLR. will I be able to play FarCry at 16x12?

hmmm your cpu will hold you back a bit...

If you want to reduce that problem you just have to oc a bit.

Athlon 2700xp+ (oc: 3200xp+ with 200fsb) , Radeon 9800pro (oc: 410/360) , 512mb pc3200 (5-3-3-2), Asus A7N8X-X

Coylter is dumb. Any cpu, even a 3ghz A64 FX, 'will hold you back', because wouldn't a 3.5ghz A64 FX perform better? There is a point though where increasing CPU speed does less and less.

Run your cpu at 200x11 or higher (I dunno what kinda cooling you have). (You can definately run at 200x11, set the vcore to 1.75) OC that X800 too!

Yeah you can play far cry at 1600x1200, you little dipsh*t (frickin lucky a$$ bastard.)

Me: are you saying I can't provide?
Me: cause I know I can provide.
Me: oh and I can provide money too;)
Rachel:): why do we need money when we can just stay in our room and have sex all day?

Meh, you guys are all off.

It really depends on the app you're running. A 2600 isn't going to hold the video card back on certain games (say quake3), but it will hold you back like crazy on other games that rely heavily on AI or other computation-heavy stuff (Like Lock On Modern Air Combat)

The opposite is also true, that a video card can hold you back on shader-heavy games (like Far Cry) but isn't as much of a factor in games that use simpler graphics.

Always depends on the app. But in Far cry specifically, I believe the video card is holding you back more. The 2600 should be sufficient, and an X800 will provide you with very sizable gains.

The funny thing is that it really appears that even up until 16x12 Far Cry is somewhat CPU limited for the X800XTPE.

Frame rates dip only marginally when the res. is uped to 12x10 and 16x12 w/out AA/AF.

Look at FiringSquad's review results;

<A HREF="http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/ati_radeon_x800/page23.asp" target="_new">http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/ati_radeon_x800/page23.asp</A>

Even with AA/AF you can see how moving fom 800x600 to 1024x768 has little impact.

However 16x12 WITH AA/AF it's definitely the GPU, but that's not surprising at that detail level.

So obviously it's both, but it depends on where. Without AA/AF it's definitely CPU limited IMO.
