I have about 500 bucks to enhance the performance of my PC but am not sure as to where to start. I could either upgrade my processor to an xp3200 and add 1gb pc3200, or get a new video card x800xt.

Current system specs should be in my sig...

If you're upgrading for games and games only... I'd go 9800 PRO ($200), 1 GB RAM, a great CPU cooler (the Coolermaster Aero 7+ does a great job for cheep, less than $30), and overclock your 2500+ to 3200+ or faster spec for free. And then for more bang, see how far that 9800 will overclock!

And unless you have a name brand power supply, buy a good name brand PSU with the money left over, at least 400 watts.

Presto! Supersystem on the cheap.

My system is very similar to yours, except I have a 9800P, and I managed to score an extra 256Mb stick of RAM for free, which has totally smoothed out the performance in Far Cry, although as a consequence my memory is not currently in dual-channel (though the smooth gameplay makes up for it). The best thing for you to do would be to upgrade to a 9800 Pro and try to increase your memory because the new games are finally putting the hurt on. I figure I can get some decent cash selling my XMS modules on eBay, so keep that in mind in case you are worried about the price of new RAM.

Get a 9800 Pro and OC your CPU, which may require some better cooling (slk-800/900 or alx-800 would be the best options). If you have a crappy CPU that won't do at least 2.4, get a mobile 2400 for 90 bucks. If you decide to get more ram, which is the last thing on the list you should do, get 2 512 sticks and sell the ram you have.

Me: are you saying I can't provide?
Me: cause I know I can provide.
Me: oh and I can provide money too;)
Rachel:): why do we need money when we can just stay in our room and have sex all day?
Edited by Willamette_Sucks on 05/13/04 01:11 AM.
