Installing a VGA Silencer on a Radeon 9800 Pro

Im looking to buy a VGA Silencer and some copper RAMsinks for my Radeon 9800 Pro, so I can OC my card and get a better 3DMark03 score than 5520. How would I install the VGA Silencer? What kind of thermal stuff should I use? I hear Arctic SIlver 5 is great, but that's not an adhesive. Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive is permanent, what if I need to take the VGA Silencer (Rev.3) off? Also, how would I go about removing the stock cooler? Also, this is a bit off topic, but how do I tell wheat kind of RAM I have a Sapphire 9800 Pro? Could someone post pictures of the 3 different types, or could I just post a pic of my card's RAM. I don't see a brand on the RAM...

I did search, and I did not come across the answers to these questions. Could you answer them or at least link me to a thread that does answer them?

I have installed the VGA silencer on my Radeon 9800 pro and it comes with everything you need to install it (including paste). Dont put adhesive paste on the GPU. Its easy and quick to install, the only problem i had was removeing the paste that was already on there.

Why don't you put paste on the GPU?

Okay, I've been searching for a while and I can not find anything! Do I need it to be adhesive thermal stuff is all I need to know. Does it have to be an adhesive? Or will Arctic Silver 5 work fine without being mixed with a bonding agent? Also, I can't find how to figure what kind of RAM I have. Searched, nothing.

Don't use adhesive, can't think of any time I'd attach a heatsink/fan combo with just adhesive, wouldn't want to trust adhesive with something getting vibrations like that. THe vga silencer has a bracket on the back, and two screws that screw through the board into the heatsink on the front.

Okay, is that good, bad, or okay?
I only have two questions left:
1. Does the thermal compund I use have to be an adhesive? Or will Arctic Silver 5 work fine without being mixed with a bonding agent?
2. How do I get the original heatsink/fan off?

I thinks it's ok.

Like others said, just use AS5, no need bonding agent, or sticky muck.

2. How do I get the original heatsink/fan off?
Put card into ziplock bag. Place in freezer for 1-2 hours. Pop it out, and try taking out HSF. Allow to cool to room temperature before operating. If HSF did not pop out, heat it with a hairdryer or run an intensive game to heat it. HSF should then pop out. Serve.

Hey DWells, I've got some answers for ya. Thanks to the help of the guys on here, I can say, with confidence, I'm happy where I am, without any volt-mods (at least for the next 6 months lol). Got a 9800 pro, a VGA silencer, and OZC ramsinks. Used Arctic Silver Ceramique for the core(which I also use on my CPU). The stuff is cheap, and bang-for-the-buck the best you can get. I use Goof-Off for cleaning my heatsinks (not the OCZ ramsinks because they have thermal tape which seems to work fine) and cores, and then rubbing alcohol to finish it up nice and shiny-like. Go to Arctic Silver's website here to check out proper compound application. The VGA silencer helped me get a 25Mhz boost over the stock cooler and I use the OCZ copper BGA ramsinks and suprisingly got an additional 9Mz increase on my DDR overclock (most people say you'll only get around 3Mz). My current max stable overclock is 434Mhz Core and 387(774) DDR. And that, believe it or not, is with Hynix DDR with no volt-mod's or voltage increases. I'm not saying you'll get the same reults because my first 9800 pro's core wouldn't go over 410. The DDR was just as good though. Hope some of that helps. And no, you don't need to remove the shim around the core. Don't let wusy tell you otherwise...lol...

Wow, great response! Thanks a ton! So, about how many more 3DMark(03)s did you gain over the same card running at stock speeds? Oh, and what do you mean by first 9800 Pro? Did you fry it?

My shitty card wont go above 312/365 when your take the stock HSF fan off your card look at what is printed on your core .If its a 350 you should be able to get a higher overclock than with a 360 core.I have a 360 core

sorry DWells for the late response. Yeah, my first 9800 was CRAP with a capital "S". I had these results/gains:

+800 points on 3DMark03
+800 points on 3DMark01se
+4,350 points in AquaMark3

hope you get some good gains. I only overclock while gaming. I also turn the fan on HIGH for gaming, along with the rest of the fans in my case. Other than that, I run at stock speeds, and all my fans are on LOW.
