ok so my 9500pro arrived a little while ago and i just got a bios yesterday to try overclocking. looks like a BBA and has 3.3ns Samsung ram

got it form 275/270 up to 395/335. will probably go a little higher, bceause at thhose speeds both the GPU and ram are both so hot i cant touch them. needless to say i put them back down a bit

but the performance.. is what kinda makes me wonder.

i formatted and resintalled xp pro. installed DX9b, then my chipset drivers (nforce2 drivers that came on the cd, which are actually the ones still posted on Abit's site. regular nforce2 drivers from nvidia.com screw up my soundstorm, imagine that) and then other things like my nics and audio and lastly, I used 3.7 Cats and 4.5.

at stock in 3dmark2001 i get around 13k. 3dmark03 i get 3500. heres my specs i guess:

AXP @ 2.4ghz
NF7-S Rev2
768megs/ddr400 @ cas2.5 (cause i got some ddr333 o/c'd that wont handle cas2)
9500pro
XP Pro

i was getting 13.5k with my TI4200 (275/530) before. you would think that a full R300 core with higher clocked ram would score higher in 3dmark2001 , right? and i see people posting 14/15k scores at stock with 9500pro.. well mine doesnt..

so far ive tried 3 different chipset drivers as well to no avail. havnt tried 3dmark while overclockign, because i wanna get it working as it should be before i go any further.

You should consider using 3DMark03. You wil see a big difference with 3DMark03. GeForce TI 4200 are really good in DX8.1 titles they can attain impressive numbers in 3DMark2001. Your Radeon 9500 will shine in newer applications and games (read DX9.0).

Check the THG VGA CHART III you will understand and see that the Radeon 9500 is not the TI 4200 killer. But, if you turn ANISO/FSAA on, your Radeon will kick the butt of your old TI 4200.

My brother got that card right when it came out. It's pretty sweet in games. I don't know about bungholio marks, but it's a fast card.

My 9500 PRO is clocked WAYYY less than yours, and I'm hitting 4k in 3dMark03.

If you're only hitting 3700 in 3dMark03 with those massive overclocks, a) you have a 9500 non-pro, or b) something else is terribly wrong.

nono 3500 is at stock, 275/270

if i had mine at 340/330 like yours it would probably hit 4k

any ideas to get it working better, sinse you have some experience with yours?

3500 stock is about right. You'll probably get 4100-4200 overclocked.

I'm not sure what you expected. You'll beat the pants off of a 4x00Ti in any application that uses pixel/vertex shaders.

If you're looking at 3dMarks, use 2003... 2001SE is obsolete, just as much of a CPU bench as a Video card bench.
Sure, the 9500 might only be on par with the Ti's in old Dx7 games, but who cares when everybody's getting +200 fps?
In actual Dx9 heavy games, you'll be beating FX5950s. That's where it counts, where the framerates are much lower... and that's where the 9500 PRO delivers.

A stock 9700 PRO would only get around 5000 in 3dMark03...

OR your card is running WAY TOO HOT. You know what overheating does to performance. Right? Try downclocking it in several stages and see how your scores change. Chances are they will go up as the card cools down until they start going down as the acceptable clock speed becomes insufficient. At that point O/C up to the previous highest performance level.

Look up Slava, after I made that post Phial clarified that the 3500 was STOCK clocks, which is about right.

I find my 9500 PRO will keep increasing in performance after artifacts show as clocks increase, so the limiting factor is finding where the artifacts don't exist...

Hehe. He says he gets 3700 after major O/Cing if I read it right because 3500-3700 looks like too big a variation if both scores are reported at stock and all else is equal. Your clock/mem, however, is smack in the middle between his setting and stock. And as he said it is so hot - one cannot touch it. Hence => the suggestion I made...

ok i just ran UT2004 with 16xAF and 6xAA @ 50fps stready. 1024x768

:)

my TI4200 couldn only run half detail on most things to get that frame rate, with no AA/AF

so yea im happier now

This is interesting because on my system I noticed that at some point O/Cing the P-4 CPU and/or my FX5700 Ultra has the opposite effect, regardless of the artifacts. Could these things be different for us because you have an Athlon/ATI based system and I have a Pentium/nVIDIA based one?

My 9500np has Infinion 3.3 and 308 is about as far as I can go with cheap ramsinks...

I have a BBA 9700 Pro on its way with Samsung 301... I have read that 330 is about max for that, but if you are getting 335 with 3.3, I am not sure what to expect...

Awsome score Phial. You beat my 9500Pro's score.
i saw some crazy chinese people got like 5003 in a stock speed 9600xt and cat 4.5.
I call bullshiit. I pushed a 9600XT till it artifacted, and only scored 4,150ish. The scores were posted here on the board's.

Glad you made it to this thread, as I was waiting to see if you'd comment.

And yes I agree with your assesment of the R9600XT results. Stock R9600XT? Doubt it, unless it's one of those BRAVO EXTREME thingys that have 'stock' speeds far in excess of the 500/300. Overclocked, I can see, but stock, no chance.

Would you recommend PHIAL use Ramsinks? Did you find they helped or hindered you? I've seen conflicting results out there.

Ape: im probably going to get ramsinks, because i got a 120mm fan blowing right over the video card around 1500rpm (vantec stealth), and then another 120mm blowing out the back of my case.. ambeint temps are barely over room temperature, even when i overclock

and im also going to get a way bigger heatsink because Crashman had taken it off when he had it before it was shipped to me and he said there was alot of gaps underneath, not touching the gpu completely...

mmmmm cant wait until i can run 370~ core and 330mem

Sure, if he want's to lose about 7 or 8 mhz off of his max memory overclock...

how would ramsinks make me lose 8mhz? wouldnt they keep my ram cooler, especially with that big fan blowing on the sinks?

and wouldnt it be safer so that my ram doesnt fry?
