dual screen problems

okay guys i was setting a computer for my friend's mom.
She has a Compaq laptop with mobile Rage for video card. She just bought a 19inch LCD trying to make the laptop a desktop replacement. So i connect everything but NOW when i try to play a video on the laptop it would be just black on the monitor and it will be playing in the laptop LCD... WTF?! i should update the drivers, OH WAIT its a rage, like 500 year old GPU, there is no updated drivers anymore..... someone help me > <

The problem is CS, that I'm completely unfamiliar with the control panel of ATi' Rage/Pro. Hopefully somebody like Grape or Crash will be able to help you. In the Radeon's control panel, you can set each or whatever monitor as default, so that when you play a movie, or launch a game, the default monitor display's the good's.

Ok, I think what you're experiencing is what happens when you connect external monitors to laptops. Often you have to select where the latop sends the video in doing so usually you have a button that looks something like this on the keyboard: [ ]/[#] (where the # symbol is really a filled in square).

This should allow you to switch from Laptop LCD to External to LCD + External (mirrored).

If that doesn't work I'll ask a friend who used to have a Presario (6800 I think??), he'd likely know. HE now has one of my Thinkpads after he sold his Laptop (to pay for tuition!)

High. Try loading ATI's driver to replace the default Windows driver, and set the second display as primary.

Hard to say...figure it out!

The old Rage drivers are separate from the Catalyst drivers, I know that much. I also know that ATI has a separate driver line for mobile chips, but I don't think you need the special driver (not sure), and I'm not so sure they're available from ATI anyway (ATI might say to get them from the notebook maker).

Talked to my friend who had the Compaq, and he said it was a fn key like the one I described.

If that doesn't do it, don't know what would. Check BIOS setting maybe.

that sounds like a driver issue did ya see if there were any updates on Compaq's site. Pretty sure ATI doesn't support rage dirvers anymore

ati rage laptops cards don't support daul display,

did you do this?

Set up "extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor".
Click the second monitor, you should now be able to check 'Make this my
primary monitor', then click on monitor 1 and uncheck 'extend.."

This will probably still boot onto your notebook LCD, but should switch to the
external once windows loads up the video drivers/registry settings.
