Freeing space on NTFS partitians

I am saving Norton's ghost images on NTFS formatted
drives. When I remove(delete) the ghost file, the space is not
freed and I can only recover the free space by
reformatting partition. I can confirm this by totaling
used space and comparing to disk properties.
I'm using a winxpsp2 OS
Does anyone have an answer to this problem?

Emptying the Recycle Bin too? If Norton's Protected Bin is installed, that
will also have to be emptied. If no luck, does a run of chkdsk correct the
reported free space?

PS: Remember that due to how files are stored, "total size" is different
than "total size on disk."

Thanks for your suggestions. I followed up and
1: I Added a 19 gb game dir to disk. New storage
amounts were recorded ok to actual and disk
property calculations.
2: Removing games dir. from disk also diminished
actual and "disk property" usage amounts by 19gb.
3. I measured usage after clearing recycle bin.

Only deleted Ghosts(rel 9.0) images are not subtracted
from any of my NTFS disks' property calculations. As
the "King of Siam" says "It's a puzzlement" for those
old enough to remember the King and I.

What version of Ghost are You using?
I use Ghost 2003 and do exactly as you are describing and have NEVER had a
problem as you describe. You do know that you cannot save ghost images to a
partition that is being imaged?
If you have a DVD burner, I would suggest using DVD-RW disks and burn the
partitions separately to DVD disks. I keep a 3 sets of image disks also and
rotate them always keeping two up-to-date image sets. This is essential in
case of HD failure which I had recently and had a new HD installed and
running in less than one hour.

I remember it and was lucky enough to see it on stage when Yul Brenner was
still playing the King. You're right, this is quite a puzzlement. Since it
definitely appears to be related to Ghost, you might check Symantec's site
for more info.

Aside: I've never used Ghost (have used Drive Image and Image for Windows)
but perhaps it would help to delete the image from the Ghost program menus?
Maybe the program is reserving space/reporting space used for these deleted
images?

I am having the exact same problem. I could not find any answeres on
Symantec's web site and I was unable to find any instructions on how to
contact them other than through their paid support site. Symantec
obviously does not wish to be troubled with support issues from the
users of their products unless they are willing to pay extra for it.
If anyone has found any way to resolve this issue please post a link or
reply here. Thanks.

Do like Sharon said earlier. Right click your recycle bin and select
"Empty Norton Protected Files". If that does not correct it, there may
still be some large files in the Norton Protected Recycle Bin that are
being missed. Go to the root directory of the drive where the backup
images were being stored. Make sure that you have the folder options
set to show hidden files and folders. Go into the recycler folder for
that drive and look for the large files that you thought you deleted
earlier and manually delete them. You may have to temporarily turn off
the Norton protection, I don't remember if I had to or not. Anyway,
that is what turned out to be the problem in my case with the missing
free space.
