LeadTek GeForce 5950 Ultra Power?

I'm running a 380 Watt Antec PSU and when I plug in the power to the video card, Windows locks up and I have to reboot. After rebooting, it almost immediately locks up again. I've reformatted and left the video card power unplugged and I can use the computer without any problems. So, being that the Video Card requires a 350 Watt PSU, and all I have running is 1 80GB HD and a CD-Rom, is this the cause of my lockups?

If that is the case, should I get a 550Watt because I have 2 other internal HD's that I hook up and 2 external HD's that run USB 2.0 - among many other USB components.

ASUS P4P800 SE
P4 2.8GHz HT
1GB Dual Ch
Win XP Pro

Thanks!

  1. Do Memtest86, and run troubleshooter, the problem to me sounds like ram.

  2. "when I plug in the power to the video card, Windows locks up and I have to reboot."

Huh?... you plug the power to the video card while your system is running?

You're supposed to plug it in while it's shut down, dude.

  3. I don't do it while the system is running :) After I power down, I plugged in the power to the card and it locks up within 1-5 mins into windows. Sometimes, It doesn't even get into windows.

  4. I had a bad harddrive do the same thing. It may not be the card it could be the hard drive is bad and the drivers aren't able to load
  5. I replaced the memory after running memtest86 and it found 202 errors when testing my RAM. So far so good. We will see.

Anyone else have any other suggestions?

  6. I replaced the RAM - Seemed to be ok after that, then it was still locking up. I removed the SB Audigy Platinum card to see if it was an IRQ issues and it still did it. I tried using their on board sound and it still does it. I switched MoBos to a GigaByte P4 Titan and it is still locking up. My conclusion is: Doesn't it almost have to be the PSU? Just to refresh your memory, I've got an Antec 380W PSU.

  7. Well your definetly not leaving much power for insurance. I would prolly pick up an Antec TruePower 430W just so you know its not the PS. They run about $40 if I remember correctly.

Crap, all the good ones are already taken.
  8. Well, after switching the RAM and removing the Audigy Card, new processor - I went and got a ATI 9800 Pro :) Happy man right here! The WinFast A380 5950 Ultra was the issue. Now, whether it was the card it self, or it was under powered, I don't know. I'm just happy to have everything running again.

BTW - I did switch the RAM just too be sure and I'll be keeping that.

  9. LOL if your ram has 1 fail in memtest86, it's gonna f*ck up very very soon, as soon as it errors up in memtest, RMA time.

  10. I take back what I said, I have had a few lock ups in the past few mins. They are random and I could be doing nothing or just surfing the web. Currently, I'm running all new components. I don't think I explained what happened to begin with.

Long but I need to explain -

    I had an Intel D865GBF and 3GHz P4. In that machine I had 4 HDs - 200GB, 120GB, 80GB, 27 GB. I had 2 External HDs - 160GB and a 40 GB. I was running the GeForce FX5900 (128mb). I had the Audigy Platinum, 1 IDE Adapter, 1 DVD+RW, 1 DVD-ROM, 1 4-port USB 2.0 Card. All in the Antec Piano Black Sonata Case with a 380w PSU.

While trying to re-arranging things inside, I decided to get a new MoBo. I went and got a GigaByte P4 Titan, some new RAM, and a 120GB HD.

While hooking everything up, I did something very stupid. I hooked up a 12v line to the MoBo for the AGP card and a line to the card itself. When I powered on, BOOM. It turned on and then back off. I knew then, once I looked in, I F'd it up - but didn't know how bad.

I took the MoBo back to Fry's and got another. Came home and relaized the Processor was dead by process of elimination. I went to a local place and bought a new processor. Came home and listened to those lovely beeps and found out the RAM was dead. Went to the store and bought 1 GB Dual Channel. Came back to find out that my Video card was shot. Went out and bought the WinFast A380 5950 Ultra. Came back and it was giving me lockup issues. I thought it was the RAM or and IRQ issue. I was only booting up with the AGP card and nothing else. So I had a hard time beliveing that it was and IRQ issue. I went back to Circuit City and got another Antec Piano Black Sonata Case (380w PSU) and thought my 5950 Ultra wasn't getting enough power. ***** Side note: Things that were hooked up and destroyed when I toasted the system: 200GB HD, 120GB HD, GeForce FX5900, Processor, MoBo, USB Card Reader, 1GB RAM *****

After trial and error, I thought maybe I had a bad MoBo. I went to a local place and bought the ASUS P4P800 SE. It was doing the same thing. Lockup during BOOT, during BIOS screen, in Windows.... Off to the store today to buy the ATI 9800 Pro (128mb). Everything seemed to be ok for a while. Ocasionally I have a hard time booting it up and have to press restart a few times inorder to get it to fire up, but I'm working with that. Then it locked up in Windows. I knew that it wasn't fixed. So I thought there's only one thing still being used that was from the original system that didn't fry --- My Optical Wireless KB & Mouse.

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES that that could be the factor?? I mean, 2 MoBo's, 4 sticks of RAM, 2 new Video Cards, 1 New case & PSU and 1 new HD later .... It is driving me nuts! Maybe I should take everything back and comepletely start over.

If someone can help me here..... Please do!

  14. Could it be an actual problem with the power at your house? You might want to invest in a UPS and see if that helps.

  16. seeing as how you already had to have spent like 2 grand, go and buy a UPS with AVR...youd probably want it anyway even if thats not the problem. But i really really really think it is. You replaced EVERYTHING in this system. If the voltage coming in through your outlet is fluctuating a lot, it would fry every new peice of hardware you put in there (especially ram). When i used to work at best buy, i encountered at least one person a week with this exact problem.

  20. Same Sh!t :) Nothing has changed. I came back from Olive Garden and it was locked up. I looked at the report from the APC unit and it was fine.

Maybe I should manually set my timing for the RAM?

  21. so...let me get this all straight...when you first encountered these lockups you had a different mobo, RAM, video card, case, power supply, keyboard, and mouse? But you said it worked fine when you didnt use the geforce card. Does it still work alrght with integrated graphics? (assuming your new mobo has it)

  22. Ok - Everything has been working fine since I returned EVERYTHING and bought all new stuff :) The problem was the processor - But, since I was upgrading, I thought I'd buy all new anyway.
