Ok I have a Geforcefx5700 standard. It's listed as 425/550
I installed coolbits and it has two things a 2d setting and a 3d setting

Now 2d says 300/500
and 3d says 425/500

When I'm playing a game which one is it ? is it another of those application controlled things?

And if it's running 425/500 in games does the driver set the memory lower than what the manufacturere (chaintech) has rated it at and should I crank it up to 550 ?

3D is the gaming setting.

As for trying 550MHz--go for it, but if you have any instability or artifacts, drop it down to 500 and slowly work your way up.

the default is 2d should i change it to 3d ?
You can but if you overclock your 3D clocks and set 3D (clock speeds) as default then the card will run overclocked even in desktop applications.

Make sure the air coming out of the back of your PC is not warm or you may get burned. Read my post on how I broke my PC. Better yet return the FX5700 if you can and get a FX5700 Ultra 128 Mb. It costs about the same but it is MUCH faster even without overclocking.
