Forum Windows XP : General Discussion All FTP Unable to connect

In the last 3 days, I've been completely unable to connect to anything on the
interent via FTP. I've tried 4 separate programs (maybe 5, if the Microsoft
Antispyware Update uses FTP, as it cannot cnnect either) and none have been
successful. All I get are short and sweet messages such as Warning, Unable
to connect to the interent. I've searched and tried several things, but so
far none have worked. Among the things I've tried is making sure Passive FTP
is enabled and turning off the firewall.
Any ideas?

Go to a command prompt and type in:
netsh winsock reset
and hit enter, restart the machine.
You will need to reinstall any programs which have added themselves to the winsock stack.

Hi Mark,

I have what I believe to be the same problem as Sn0wman, and have tried
the same fixes. I've done a thourough system scan for malware. Also
just tried your suggestion with the 'netsh' command and rebooting.
Same problem -- I still can't FTP.

For me, however, FTP GUIs simply hang, and issuing FTP 'open' commands
from the command prompt accomplish nothing but a blinking cursor. I
don't receive error messages. It attempts to connect, but never
completes it.

Any other suggestions? Help!

sforister

My fix was to assign the ftp site to the internal (LAN) IP address (Server
Local Area Connection). I then created a custom service in Routing and
Remote Access -> IP Routing -> NAT/Basic Firewall -> Network Connection ->
Properties -> Services and Ports to listen on the external IP and map to the
internal IP on port 21. Works perfectly now.

I didn't install the patch I listed in my previous post.

Hope that helps.

Rob

Should have specified that this only fixed clients not being able to access
our FTP site. We still can't access external sites via active FTP.

None of this has helped me yet. Anymore ideas out there, or am I headed of a
HD reformat?
