Help! Radeon 9500 pro problems

Help, I've been having problems with my Radeon 9500 pro card. It's been smearing textures in games, and nothing that I've tried to fix this problem works! I've reformated hard drives, went from windows 98 to windows 2000, even switched out my old 300W powersupply to a new magnum 400W.

I'm running a AMD Althon Thunderbird 1.4 GHZ, with 640mb of PC2100, a ECS k7s5a motherboard, with sound blaster audigy, my main drive is a 10gb western digital, it's cooled with a 2 80mm fans plus the power supply fan, and I have a big 4 1/2 inch fan on the backside of the power supply, also have one of those fan things that take up a 5 1/4 inch drive bay. The huge fan is not connected to the power supply. I have the latest drivers for my mobo and video card.

Dumb question, but have you tried playing with the settings in the driver?

Try putting everything on maximum...

roll back to some older catalyst drivers and see if that helps. also, make sure your card itself isnt getting too hot

Are you sure the fan itself is running?

The fan on the video card burned out on me, so I replaced it with a cpu fan that I glued on there where the video card fan used to be. If anything that fan that I put on there works better than the video card one. I had these problem, however, before the fan burned out. I don't think that it's too, hot in my case. Ususally, its about 95 F in there, but if anyone knows different plz share your advice. My processor is normally about 150 to 175 F, which is hotter than I would like, but I can seem to reduce the heat.
Nevertheless, my card seems to glitch up on all these games even if I have the computer off to cool off then turn it on and play it right away. I've played around with the driver settings, and I've taken them from max performance to min performance nothing helps. Does Ati do replacements off warranty?

are you overclocking your card? the only time i get artifacts like that (and yes, they are exactly like those in your screen shot) are when i overclock too high, or when my video card gets too hot from almost being overclocked too high


you would have had to flash the card with the overclocking bios tho, because 9500pros arent overclockable with the stock bios


if you have, trying downloading ATITool or RivaTuner and turning it down a bit to see what happens. if not, try blowing a fan right on your card or taking the side off your case to see if that helps

perhaps the card was permanentaly damaged when the fan burned out? it takes only a few seconds for it to get hot enough if theres no fan...


and i dont know if ATI does out of warranty replacements. and that is definately out of warrantly if you replaced the fan yourself.




ps- i have a brand new 9500pro for sale for $80 (negotiable). i have the overclocking bios and it will go from 275/270 up to 350/325

No I'm not overclocking my video card or anything else in the case. I just tried taking the side of the case off and blowing a fan on it, and it didn't help. However, it did "reduce" the artifacts somewhat, and by somewhat I mean that one texture that didn't display right before does now. The case temp never got above 77 F and the processor never got above 120 F. Is it possible that I'm having a video card/ motherboard conflict?

Check to see if the heatsink is sitting on the video card properly.

I had a loose crystal orb that did this, luckily I quickly realized the problem...

no i dont think you are having a hardware conflict. and by taking the side off your case, it affected the symptoms so we have pretty much found out what is causing the problem




try what Cleeve sudgests, i cant think of anything better to try and it probably is whats causing the artifacts
