Just installed my new 9800pro. It rocks! Nirvana!
The old ti4200 has seen better days........

OK, the card has two switches on its back. There are just the numbers "1" and "2" on them. What are they for?

Thanks.......

What's the brand? Sounds like it might be that switch on HIS IceQ cards, which controls the fan speed.

*shrugs*

Well if i were you i'd look at the back of the card. If the ram is in a straight line it's the 128bit, if it's in an L shape then it's the 256bit. If you have the L shape ram then don't worry about it.

I'd like to hear your opinions regarding my first impressions with this great card compared to my old ti4200:

1. The red color seems to have another tone. (Note: I'm using the same samsung 753df monitor);

2. When I boot to ms-dos, the character font seems somewhat different... Does radeon have another font in its BIOS?

3. I still can't find AA and AF, just as I did with the Detonators(ti4200). They are nowhere to be found. What's wrong?

4. I'm using 1152x864@75hz. I seems that the monitor still flickers a little bit. With the old ti4200 that wouldn't happen.

5. When the background is dark, I can see some very subtle lines, as if there was some magnetic interference. This didn't happen with the ti4200. Is this OK?

I'd like to hear your comments. Thanks in advance.

this doesnt suprise me. my TI4200 had very different (and better!) color saturation in windows, but that was mainly because I used "Digital Vibrance", which ATI cards lack.

2. When I boot to ms-dos, the character font seems somewhat different... Does radeon have another font in its BIOS?
dotn know about this, but ive seen cards to this before, just dont know why it happens.

3. I still can't find AA and AF, just as I did with the Detonators(ti4200). They are nowhere to be found. What's wrong?
with ATI cards, you sometimes have to download and install the "ATI Control Panel" before you can change AA/AF settings on the display properties window

4. I'm using 1152x864@75hz. I seems that the monitor still flickers a little bit. With the old ti4200 that wouldn't happen.
hmm I dont know about this. go into Advanced Display Properties and then goto the Monitor tab to see exactly what refresh rate it is using.. if it is indeed 75hz, perhaps its just because the ATI card is using a lower quality ramdac?

5. When the background is dark, I can see some very subtle lines, as if there was some magnetic interference. This didn't happen with the ti4200. Is this OK?

this is not ok, and I would try putting the Ti4200 back in to see if it happens again or not.. if it happens only with the ATI card, then perhaps you might want to return it

Thanks for replying Phial.
The problem described in 5 is solved if I increase contrast to 80%. Comments?

I have a comment. I hate it when there is a slow driver in the fast lane. It just sucks. What's worse is people on the freeway that don't even drive the speed limit. They really should be driving on surface streets. Those people generally tend to have their face a foot from the windshield. I figure if you're that nervous or blind you shouldn't be driving at all.

Thanks for listening.

OK, I'll try to be more specific.
Have you seen something like this happen before?
Those subtle lines that appear to be some form of magnetic interference. I increased contrast, and they disappeared. I'd just like to know what causes those lines.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours,

Where are these lines?

With aperature grille monitors, you will notice two faint lines on the screen... about 1/3 of the way from the top and bottom. These are the retaining wires that hold the grille in place. They become really noticable on a white background.

No, they aren't that noticable... especially if you're used to using such a monitor. I've had mine for over 3 years, so it no longer bothers me. They're practically invisible on anything other than a white background though.
