drop down list pointer problem

The pointer on my drop down lists has begun to bounce up and down within the
list.

For example, when I open OE, the first window is the identity list. I have
three identities. If I point to the first or second identity, within a
second the pointer (highlight) jumps down to the last identity. I thought
this was only an OE problem, but then I found the same thing in Word. If I
run spell check, and I get a list of suggested words, the pointer will
bounce around within the list.

This happens anywhere from 3 to six times and then it stops.

Any help is appreciated.

I run a virus update and scan daily, and I routinely check for spyware and
adware.

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type (or paste in): SFC /SCANNOW (see: Description of Windows XP and Windows Server
2003 System File Checker (Sfc.exe): http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310747 )
