Why do you recommend 3.7?

Because of history: First I tried various versions up to 3.7. Then I tried 3.8. 3.8 wouldn't allow my hardware to be recognized by Solidworks 2003, so I went back to 3.7. Then I read all the Catalyst driver comparisons and noticed that none of the newer versions offered increased overall performance, so I decided not to try them. After all, what would I gain if they don't perform better? All I would do by updating is risk a compatability issue!

I recommend the newest version if you haven't tried any and don't have compatibiity issues, because there are alot of bug fixes in the latest models.

However if you are running older versions fine without issue, then there's no pressing reason to upgrade except for some PS2.0 boosts and some slight OGL boosts, but even then they're not huge (~10-20%) from my experience.

Considering how easy it is to install/uninstall them I'd give a few a try if you're unsure.

I proudly use CATALYST 4.6 with my OLD Radeon 8500 LE overclocked at 275/290! I can go higher, but I don't need to, since I only play WarCraft III and some old MOHAA.

I have FarCry installed on my PC, but, I don't want to play it at medium quality/low-res. I wait my GPU upgrade to play it!

I recommend 3.7

4.6 is faster, and are more up to date with current games for bug fixes and performance updates

I've tried every versions, I do see a little performance increasing after Catalyst3.7, but any Catalyst after 3.7 makes my N64 emulatot not working..so I either install 3.2 or 3.7..since the performance increasing with other Catalysts (4.6 for example) is not that great..so i just stuck with 3.2 or 3.7
I have FarCry installed on my PC, but, I don't want to play it at medium quality/low-res. I wait my GPU upgrade to play it!
That's exactly what I'm doing as well
oh, btw, my old 8500LE isn't lucky enough to have high quality memory, it has some crappy 4ns on it, when i oc it to 250Mhz, it caused artifacts in 3Dmark2001..
currently, it's running at 275/243, the core however, can go much higher..but i see no big performance jumps..so i leave it at 275

I bought my 8500LE just a few weeks after the 9700 launch, it probably explain why I have good ram on it (rated 275MHz). And it's a Built By ATI.

Hey btw..which graphic card are you looking at right now? it seems to me that there won't be any better AGP video cards in the future right?

AGP will be around and widely available for a year at least. PCI-EXPRESS is so new and only Intel LGA775 systems supports it right now.

Keep in mind that most PC buyers still buy AGP based PC. And nVidia who makes AMD chipset have not yet launched their PCI-EXPRESS nForce chipset.

X800/6800 is probably the last native AGP GPU that will hit the market, but thay are not that bad performer! And think of people who buy Socket939 system today, they will need faster AGP GPU in the next 2 years. So we may see future AGP product on the market because of the installed based is so HUGE!
