I'm upgrading my system and was wondering which graphic card wouldsuit me the best.
The two cards I'm lookin at are, surprise surprise, X800 XT and 6800U.

I use my computer mostly for gaming and image editing (and some minor video editing as well). Which card would be better (ought to last for ~2 years)

The system will (most likely) be:
Processor: AMD 64 FX-53
MoBo: MSI socket 939
Ram: 1GB
Display: Viewsonic VP171B
HD1: Seagate 5400 80GB
HD2: Seagate 7200 160GB
PSU: ZM400B-APS

EDIT: I forgot to say; I'm willing to pay for performance so I'm not really concerned about the price (yet).

I wish I had as much money as you. Working for McDonalds and having a PC really don't go too well together!!! lol

Id pick the GF6800U it has added features as well as being the fasters performer atm. Although they are hard / impossible to find.

I'm sure someone wil have to disagree with me!

I'm sure you know this already but your statement makes it look like the 80gb will be your boot drive. I would make sure that the faster 7200rpm drive is the boot drive. Your programs and windows will run quicker that way. or you could get a 10k raptor as a boot drive

The best deal as of right now, (and this could change) is the 6800gt around the 300$ range. Great performing card with a decent price and also has future specs such as PS3.0.

AMD64 2800+
MSI Neo-Fis2r

Sapphire 9800pro 128mb
10K WD Raptor

I'd suggest watever your heart's desire. The Geforce 6 series is showing more promise, especially that in some cases (toms farcry 1.2 patch article) that pixel shader 3.0 and a patch to the game enableing its feature set make the GF6 series the fastest performers in all but the highest res were 4x AA and Aniso are used, but even then they are only behind by 4 or 5 fps, lol, that is still withing a margine of error or accurately reading framerates. I'd suggest BFG for Nvidia and Visiontek for ATi route, both offer lifetime warranties and are good overclockers. I can vouch that the 6800 GT is a blasing fast card. (no i have not updated my profile yet, i have a BFG 6800 GT)

The BFG sure looks nice. However, I've read that it pretty much requires a 480w+ PSU.

Since I'm using a 400w and I've got quite a bunch of stuff (forgot to add in the first post. I've also got an LG DVD+/-RW RAM and a Samsung DVD-player) and the nvidias tens to eat watts like popcorn, will my wattage be enough?

If you max things out and the PSU is mediocre, then it may be an issue. The GF6800U does require a fair amount more juice, and if you have lots of memory, a few opticals, and what appears to be a few HDs, then you will be stressing things.

But a QUALITY 400 PSU may do ok, ZM is a Zalman? Not sure thier PSU quality, their cooling solutions are good. However, it is one of those things where every additional item including sticks of memory, 80mm fans, etc adds to the power profile, and pushes the requirement from well it will rund on a 300W PSU to yes you need a 450+ PSU.

That is true, the X800's overclock more, but even oced, the Gt is still alot faster than the X800 Pro, and you can oc the GT's, they only have 300 watt ps requirement like the X800's, only the Ultra needs that extra power, and i believe guru3d did a test as well as hardocp and both said a 350 watt ps will be ok if you are only running 1 hd and optical drives, a 400 watt should be enought if it is high quality as mentioned earlier for your situation.

Well, the power problem should be solved now. I decided to get a Tagan 480w PSU instead so I guess I've got enough power for an ultra now.

But wait, you'll want to SLI another Ultra in there. Uh-oh, better sell that PSU and Get an Enermax 650!
