what are the average best overclock speeds of a Radeon 9800? Im getting one and i was curious how far it will go and how much ram heatsinks will help push it.

Not sure about the avg. The 9800 pro comes with different ram (samsung, hynix and the other I forget atm). You'll get different results depending on which memory you have. Samsung being the best. I guess by now most ship with the newer core (the one for the XT model).

My bba 9800 pro is running a bit faster (both core and mem) than XT speeds, and haven't pushed it yet to see how high I can go. It's the rig in my sig, which is at home - so from memory I think I've got the core at about 425 and the memory at 380/760 IIRC. It has the sansung memory and I'm using the Rage3d tweak proggie to OC it.

EDIT: Regarding the ram HS, I've seen posts here indicating some get lower OC results after adding them, so haven't been too interested yet. IIRC, they can be pain to install and void ur warranty, which I don't wanna do after shopping hard to find a card that came with a three yr warranty.

Make sure that you don't buy one of the new 9800 Pros that have the 128-bit memory interface, there's been a lot of acrimony about this as they are slower than the true 9800 Pro. A BBA 9800 Pro is a safe purchase and you get the nice warranty.

I don't know how much the memory will benefit from heatsinks, and it will void your warranty. If you really want to use them, then save yourself the headache and buy the ones that have thermal tape attached; tests show that they perform the same as HS that were attached by hand with thermal epoxy, which is a pain in the a$$. Also, they can be removed fairly easily, unlike the epoxy.

The heatsinks I was looking at do have the thermal tape on them. Figure I'll see what results i get without them and if they arent that good then try the heatsinks. The 9800 I'm talking about is a BBA Radeon 9800 non pro. 325/580. Figure I'll try clocking it as close to a 9800 Pro as I can and save some money in the process. I only paid about 150 for it after shipping so getting it close to a 9800 Pro would be really nice.

Again with the 9800 non pro, it will depend on the memory. I had a BBA 9800 with crappy infinion memory that couldn't come close to pro speeds. Other people with Samsung memory had no problem hitting pro speeds or flashing to a pro bios.

Infinion memory.
Dont distress though, I have the same card, and have ran it clocked @450/335. I'm not into any type of artifacts though, so I leave it at 425/325.
You can check the 3DMark score in my link.

425/650 would be way above expectation! I would be very happy with 350/620. Can't wait for my card to arrive!

Yes but this Genetic Weapon guy is believed to be a God among Men, he hand selects his cards as passed down from the Gods on Mount Vesuvius (you'd think Olympus, but no Vesuvius), he then takes the cards and proves if they are worthy, if not he sends them back to the Gods as a burnt offering fitting of the storied volcanic mountain.

Should you get a card, you must first burn in your VPU (let it run 3+hrs on a 3dmark loop), then download a good OC'ing tool (Rage3Dtweak from Rage3D.com is easy to start with), then independant increase one at a time either your core or your memory and find out where they max out seperately, then do them both together at slightly lower frequencies and see how that goes, then push them up from there and see where you get clean & clear stability.

Overclocking is definitely something to do on a card to card basis, because there unfortunately isnt a Global standard, except for something like the BBA R9600Pro where almost all card can reach 500/350 without issue (of course this is below the average, but a good midline). Such will be the case with your card, you may get higher OCs than GW or Lower, but the thing is to not fry your card trying to match anyone else's results until you find where your card likes to play.
