So finally we are looking at a mid-range card near the power of an R9800.

Well not too surprising considering that it'll have 8 pipes on ~400mhz memory. I would think widenning the memory would be better than just fast. 225mhz memory running 256bit width has got to be cheaper then finding memory that is comfortable with 400/800mhz. Maybe the control is just added level of complexity that's not woth the return.

This looks like a very attractive card to me, although more features would be nice too.

Actually the financial year for most companies is in the spring. Depends on the company but MArch1 and Apil 1 (no joke) are the usual starting points. For ATI it's March 1 IIRC, which means that Q3 is in the fall. Now it depends on what the InQ meant, ATI's Q3 or the third quarter of 2004.

Right now the main focus is Laptop.

Desktop is still waiting for Socket 939 PCI-EX solution. As for graphics card that depends on whats out or nearby when I'm ready to add it to the rig. Having a PCI-E and AGP board with DDR and DDR2 would be a nice solution (considering they already have that for the failing Prescott). If a 64 bit Intel solution arrives that can compete with the AMD64 then that too will be a consideration, but it better be here before the snow is deep in the mountains or I may learn to like a laptop life.

8K in 3Dmk03, now these are the kind of mid-level numbers I was looking for 7K/8k!
