to start off: i have spent alot of time today reading the forum archives but still not sure about this issue so here goes:
i am about to do a reinstall of my OS as it seems bloated/sluggish; i have xp pro/122bg [aka 114bg] hdd/1gb ram. current config: 1 114gb partition with 3 users/identities on this home machine.

with the reistall i was planning:
30Gb OS/progs/games partition
512MB swap file partition
rest [83gb] data partition

i read somewhere about needing to manually move "my documents" etc and configure each program to "start in" [ie store to] the data partition rather than the crive.

#1 figure that i have to manually move the "my documents" for each user from C: to the data drive, but will i have to manually configure the programs [word etc] to save to the data drive for each user identity? [if so it seems like a heck of a lot of work for limited benefit!]

#2 would it be better to set my partitions from the outset with fdisk, or just create the single one and then partition it up with partition magic 8?

i would appreciate your advice on the above and any other relevant info you have on the matter.

Thanks

thats quite an unessisarly complicated post there. to make programs default to a different location that default installed one you have to do it per user. you can do it as one user and copy that profile to the default user profile but your only talking about 3 users, thats nothing. as far as making the partitions, just install windows to the drive, tell it to make the first partition whatever size you dicided on then after it installs make the other partition from windows disk manager. and if your planning on putting the swap file on another partition to get a performance increase, you are wasting your time. wherever you heard that was good you heard wrong, you need to put it on a separate drive for performance increase. the performance gain is negligible anyway.

i am not putting the swap file on a separate partition for perfromane sake per se, but simply so that it remains contingous, to reduce fragmentation in general. i understand running diskeeper regulalry would do the same but i havent come across anyone suggesting any harm in doing this....unless you can enlighten me

if you set the minimum and maximum file size for the page file to the same value it will not fragment.

You move your destop by opening the enclosing folder and moving (not copying) it to where you want it. I usually put it in D:\My Documents\Email

To move My Documents you open its properties and click move.

To change the outlook express email store folder you go to tools, options, maintenance, store folder.

As far as where programs save files by default, it ususaully is either the last place you saved something with that program or my documents.

Not a lot of work really. And when you restore your PC and instantly have all your email, desktop and my documents exactly the way they were before the restore without having to do any work is great.

I just wish I new how to move the location of my address book and favorites folder. :(

---
Oh and I always keep my pagefile on a separate hard drive. If that drive is not available for some reason XP just creates an new page file on C: no problem. (well except for having to move it again).

I do this mainly so that my backups and restores are about 30 seconds faster.

your personal address book? in outlook? thats easy. just delete it from your profile and create a new one in services. you can use the same file just move it before you create the new one. as for changing the favs folder, you can do it with some reg hacking. im not going to tell you how to do it, if you need me to do that you have no business mucking around in the registry.

sorry to revisit this but...
i can get "my docs" to move okay for each user but i am struggling to do it for the desktops - whenever i reboot i find new copies of the desktop back at c:docs&settings and XP seems to only look at this version and not the onei have moved.

could you please give me a step-by-step guide hwo to move the desktop [for users wig and wam who do i need to be looged in as to do what].

thanks in advance - this is really frustrating!
