I have a old laptop running vista, it was having problems and would not connect to internet, I tried to reinstall using original vista CD but got blue screen "a problem has benn detected and windows has been shut down"

I formatted the hard drive from recovery console DOS using the command format c: now getting the same blue screen when putting in my installation disk and without any disk in CD drive get BOOTMBR is missing message.

Any ideas as to where I go from here ?

Is the hard drive dead ?

As tremec say, the problem is related to you HDD or DVD drive, check the configuration of your devices in BIOS and make you sure that your have all drivers update.
