Not a computer expert...but it was running slow and I was cleaning up,
defraging, etc. and saw you could compress to save hard drive. Did
compression. Now it tells me it can't find the config.sys file and I have to
put in original discs to repair/restore. AFTER the fact, I found something
that (if I understand it) says when you compress, your config.sys file is
separated from a driver it needs. Obviously, I did not do what you need to
before hand...I have all my personal files and business files on this system
(again stupidly not backed up since last year) and would hurt badly to wipe
it all out and restore. In fact, today I was to finish a database design and
start doing data entry for a job I recently took - would have to start at
square one if I restore...not good. Can anyone help me get around this?

Uncheck the box in my computer to compress the drive, then go to run,
type:cmd In cmd type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,then type:EXIT
Restart computer. If xp wont open, tap the F8 key on start-up,select,safe
mode,enter as administrator.

Hi Turnbaugh,

The first thing I would try to do is boot into safe mode. If you
can, then backup your data files.

While I am in safe mode, I would search the drive to see if there is
a valid config.sys on the drive (are you sure it said config.sys and
not config.nt?). Put a copy of the file into the root directory and
reboot to normal mode.

If that doesn't work and you do not have a WinXP OS CD, then you
will have to use the restore disk to initialize the system.

Make sure to backup your data while in safe mode.
