Username and Passwords do not work

I just upgraded from windows 98 se to window xp HE. I had some websites that
needed members logins : The shortcuts were in this format
http:\\username:password@members.website.com\members or similar. I cannot
get them to work on windows xp The Page always says The pAGE CANNOT BE
DISPLAYED. I set my secutity etc. to minimum level disaplayed any firewall
and virus checker . and still doesn't My window 98 se they worked with
firewall and virusscanner on. ANy answers

That format is unsupported in recent builds. See here for more information,
and a workaround.

A security update is available that modifies the default behavior of
Internet Explorer for handling user information in HTTP and in HTTPS URLs:
