Don't u just hate when u go into any store and explain your exact component needs, but that salesperson just keeps ranting about how u don't need that kind of techonology today or how the components will magically work without any tweaks or how 1 fan is better then 3? Usually all this BSing comes because the store is out of stock on particular hardware, but can't they just inform me right away and not waste anyone's time???

Sorry for the tone of this post, but it happens too often. Just thought I'd share and hear some stories as well :)

What's worse is the first tier tech support guy that has to read his whole script to you before passing you on to somebody that has the first clue what they're talking about.

I agree, but if you've ever done sales you kinda understand them to some degree. I was a very good salesman, but I would always talk like I knew everything. Granted I knew a shitload, but still sometimes I would make up stories just to make a product more exciting.

What I didn't do was talk out of my as$ though. I can't stand walking into a store like Fry's, Best Buy, or Circuit City anymore since those people have no clue what the hell is going on. It's a big joke. I went to return a harddrive and it took 3 people just to verify that it was the right drive. As if the big label on the drive isn't a dead givaway.

Keep in mind thought that buying hardware from these retailers isn't really for us. It's for low end users with no real high end or even moderate needs. Sure you can buy a GF3 at Fry's, but there isn't much selection, it costs more, and if you ask for help the sales person will have no clue what you are talking about. But the average Joe won't know the difference so they can say anything. I once saw a guy ask a question about memory and the sales guy scared the crap out of me. He was recomending 64 MB of PC100 memory for a new T-Bird setup. I don't think he had a clue what planet he was on let alone what the difference's between memory are. Worse yet the price was so high that at that time you could buy about 256 MB of PC133 online for the same price.

If you walk into these stores, you're on your own and I don't sympathize with anyone one bit. I've worked at one and I know how bad it is. Only an employee should shop there. The discounts are awesome.

Yep ergeorge, that's how my ISP's tech support works ;)

I agree with every point dhlucke. However let's not even discuss big stores, for the reasons u just mentioned ;) I am talking about local computer stores, where u can actually order a custom built pc. Even these guys, surely quite knowledgeable, they are trying to make u buy what they want, and not what u want. For instance I went to a store asking about a Tbird, the salesman was so biased against AMD, he didn't even listen to my remarks, he based his knowledge on k6, k6-2 cpu's and didn't want to admit that he was wrong, losing me as a potential customer of course. I just think that unless the customer is ordering something outrageously stupid and/or expensive, go with the customer.

I was in a local store like that just recently, looking at an ASUS A7M266, the guy kept trying to push the A7A266 on me, saying it is better. I said "I'm not so sure about the ALi chipset, I'd rather go with the AMD"
-Yes, the A7A is an AMD board
-No, I know it's an AMB board, but it doesn't have the AMD chipset, it's an Acer chipset
-Acer doesn't make processors
-CHIPSET.. not processor... CHIPSET!!!
-What's a chipset?

needless to say, i left without buying anything from him. It's scary to see how much some system builders really don't know.
