I did not know where to put this question. so I thought lets start a new thread.

What the hell does ATI stand for.
I didnt search throughly on their website. But whatever I did, did not find anything.
Dictionary.com gives <A HREF="http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?p=dict&String=exact&Acronym=ATI" target="_new">this.</A>
NASDAQ gives <A HREF="http://quotes.nasdaq.com/Quote.dll?page=multi&mode=stock&mode=Stock&symbol=ATYT" target="_new">this.</A>

Is it like GNU, acronym within acronym
<b><font color=blue>A</b></font color=blue>TI <b><font color=blue>T</b></font color=blue>echnologies <b><font color=blue>I</b></font color=blue>nc.

ATI Technologies Inc. (where ATI is an acronym for Allied Telesyn International) is a Canadian manufacturer of graphics cards and graphics chips and graphics processing units for personal computers, founded in 1985.

Allied Telesyn International is a different company.
I believe there is a telecom company that does NICs, who is also called ATI, must be this one.

That must have been a f**cked up quarter for them in 1985. Must have done changes before they listed themselves on the market.

So if now they are called ATI Tech Inc., that means its an acronym within an acronym.

Ok then if it's 'worse', then explain what <b>nVidia</b> stands for.

Or better yet, I've got a good one for you. Where did the name MATROX come from?
hint: it's not an acronym so much as a combination.

They're all goofy names.

As for ATI, if your name refers to a specific segment/product (arrays) and you move away from jst specialising there, why not encapsulate your name so that now it doesn't prejudice your buyers, it may confuse them as to the origin, but not have them dicount your product before they investigate further (and yes unfortunately some people do do snap judgements like that). Also what's in a name nowadays anyways. Probably at some point it was a numbered company. ATI sounds so much better than Ontario-9874591 corp.

Now that's a font of information. Needs to be updated with the new stuff though.

BTW, Matrox is a combination of the founders names + X. Just FYI.

Probably more a question of finding that the names they wanted to use were copyrighted to some other outfit. I've seen bands go through name h**l because they found out the name they wanted to use was "owned" by others. They finally found something they could use probably.

You mean RBI's as in baseball? Well, you CAN get runs other ways, you can get walked in when the bases are loaded and a player walks. And you didn't bat the run in if someone else batted a run and pushed you in from a base.

Yeah baseball. I was talking about how people always call it "3 RBI's" instead of "3 RBI". The R stands for run<b>s</b>.
