Why are my past system restore checkpoints disappearing?
Every time I check, I can only go back a couple of days, then when I check
it again in a week or so, the checkpoints that were available a week prior
are gone.

How much free Hard drive space do you have on your drives? Are you
running Disk Cleanup?

Hi Ferdy,
Download and run the XPSystemRestoreLife.vbs script. This will show
you how many days System Restore maintains restore points, and allow
it to be changed. The default is 90 days.
System Restore Scripts

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click the Source tab to sort by name, look for "sr" and "srservice."
Double-click each of these services, and evaluate the event
description for any indication of the cause of the problem. Make note
of the Description, EventID and Source of these Event Properties that
show an Error or Warning and post them here.
