Dvd rw will play dvd but not cd

I am running xp 2004 mce sp2. My Dvd rw player stop playing cd's but
will play dvd's. I replaced dvd drive and worked for only one day.
Now same old thing I can backup to dvd's but not cd's. When I put in
cd and click on drive it says "please insert a blank disk". Any ideas.
