I got a Falcon Northwest computer about 9 months ago. It always freezes when I am browsing the Web. The computer runs fine with every application but freezes and causes me to reboot for no apparent reason. I have been talking with the technicians for my cable access and Falcon NW for a long time now and either of them has a clue to the problem. I purchased a network card identical to the one in my Falcon and it works perfectly fine in an old Dell and a system that I built a couple of years ago. When I swapped it for the one in the Falcon, the same thing ... freeze and reboot when I am browsing the Web. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing my system to freeze? Everything in the device manager looks fine, with no alert marks. Thank you. Terence

My first thought was hard drive space. Do you have any left?

Internet explorer is one of the more likely application to crash or crash a PC. On my overclocked systems it is always a factored app when the system crashes when otherwise 'almost' stable.

Is your system overclocked or anything, and have you updated anything? If you haven't done anything and it is as they supplied it - it's their problem - get noisy. If you have done lots of system updates or hardware swaps then you may be in for a bumpy ride.

Thank you for responding. I have over 30 gigabytes of hard drive space free, my system is not overclocked and it freezes even when I use the system restore CDs that Falcon Northwest gave me with the system. Both my cable access provider and Falcon Northwest have been giving me the run-around for as long as I have had this computer. Cable company first said they don't support Windows Me, then that they do, blah, blah, blah... Falcon NW thinks they are perfect and they hold their noses up high, telling me that there is nothing wrong with the computer that they made for me. I thought that IE might be the problem so I ran that repair thing for it with the add/remove programs in the control panel ... and my system still freezes. The more I discuss this issue with Falcon Northwest, the slower they are to reply to me. Even with my limited IT knowledge, I suspect that there is something wrong with the way that Falcon put this computer together. I now do intend to make even more noise with them to get them to resolve the issue. Thank you again for responding to my post. You folks having given me the best responses that I have received regarding this issue that I am having. Take care. Terence

Are you using Netscape 6 or Opera 5.12?
Thay are bullshit and are always crahsing on my computer!

Wish i stayed with Opera 5.02!
Now that was a Stable and fast browser!

Why should you learn from your mistakes?
Learn from other´s! It´s cheaper and less painfull! :-D

Hmm. Have you tried running ScanDisk set to do a thorough scan? (Does ME even have this still?) Maybe your hard drive has physical damage.

Either way though, I'd definately get that company's tech support to take a look at it because something just isn't right.

Yes, I ran the full scan disk that took several hours to finish. I sent Falcon Northwest technical support a list of what was running after a fresh reboot (explorer, systry, rundll32, speedkey and point32). I also listed all of the IRQs for 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12. One thing that I noticed as I was looking at the IRQs is that there is a dulplicate listing under nine. It reads 09 Via Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller. Could this be the problem? Once again, thank you for responding to my post. I have been quite frustrated with this freezing problem since I got this computer and I am my wit's end.

What kind of graphics card are you using. I know there is a problem with ATI and I.E. Be sure you have the latest drivers install. You can find them here.

http://www.ati.com/na/pages/na_index.html

Also go to Microsofts Knowledge Base and look for known problems with Internet Explorer and ATI Graphics Cards.

Hope this helps

There is something else you may want to try. Go to Asus and get the latest drivers for your motherboard

Sometimes sharing IRQs isn't a bad thing. I have three PCI devices sharing IRQ 9 on my Win2K system at work. If Windows proclaims that it's a conflict, then it's probably bad. If Windows doesn't notice anything wrong, then it's probably okay.

One recent thought though, do you have any PCI card in the slot right under the AGP card? Sometimes they don't play nice together and you have to move the PCI card to another slot or re-arrange them until you find a combination that plays better together.

My A7V did the exact same thing when 1st put it together. If I set the performance on normal it would solve the problem. I can’t remember if the bios item was called “performance” but I think the 2 choices were optimal or normal. I’m sure u can find it in the bios. When I updated my bios to 1005 I was able to run at optimal with no crashes. I haven’t tried 1007 but hear it’s good. Mine works good with 1005 and I never get around to upgrading. Also use aflash in DOS. NOT asusupdate in windows. I know someone will tell u it worked fine for them but twice it didn’t for me and that’s enough to make me not try it again.

Good luck & Cya

I set that thing in the BIOS to normal and I don't seem to be freezing up anymore. Thanks so much. I also downloaded the motherboard chipset, including the AGP miniport, IDE Busmaster and IRQ Sharing drivers. Also, I got the motherboard's built-in Promise ATA100 controller. Alas, I am not sure how to use these two zip files. Could someone please explain to me how to do these, or if it is even worth it for me to do.

I just wish I came to this board to seek help six months ago. You folks have been so kind in assisting me.

All zip files need to be unzipped. Just download winzip (winzip.com, just get the free one) then unzip the files.

The 3 files u need if memory serves me is: Bios 1007 or newer, Promise ATA 100,and the Via 4 in 1.

To upgrade the bios use Aflash (u can download in at Asus’s website) in DOS. Just copy AFLASH and the BIOS 1007 to a disk (make sure to unzip it first if it’s zipped). Restart in MSDOS (I hear u should use a boot disk but I didn’t) insert your disk with AFLASH.EXE and the bios 1007. Then just run AFLASH.EXE, use the backup old bios option for safety. It’s pretty straight forward, u should have no problems. After u flash your bios with the new one, on the 1st reboot go in the bios and load the default setting, then restart, go back into the bios and change it the way u want it. You should be able to run at optimal with no crashes then.

I think the VIA 4 in 1 has a setup, or start.exe file u run then it does the rest.

To upgrade the Promise ATA 100 Bla bla, go to control panel, system, device manager, then click on the SCSI controller promise ATA, properties, driver. Then just direct it to the new one. Your computer might also show it as an unknown device if u never installed it in the 1st place. I’m writing this form memory so I might not be 100% right. But This should give u enough to work with.

Here are some links to asus’s website just in case.

Here is the newest bios <A HREF="http://www.asus.com/products/Motherboard/bios_socka.html" target="_new">http://www.asus.com/products/Motherboard/bios_socka.html</A>.

I downloaded all the needed files but I am a little nervous about going through with this (after reading that warning on the Asus site). But I sure would like to get that setting back to optimal (not that I notice a difference right now since everything seems to be running smoothly). Should I just leave well enough alone for now, or do you think I would get some increased performance from updating those things? Thanks so much everyone, and especially Lowlypawn. This has been such a headache for me and I truly appreciate the help that you folks have provided me.

You definitely want to upgrade your bios. Trust me, it’s no big deal. I’ve done it 5 or 6 times. The only time I had any problems was when I used the ASUSUPDATE in windows. It’s super easy and only takes a few minuets. Just use AFLASH in DOS and make sure there’s not a thunder storm outside you window.

Here is another cool site for the A7V, lots of info and even talks about flashing the bios.

<A HREF="http://www.a7vtroubleshooting.com/" target="_new">http://www.a7vtroubleshooting.com/</A>

Read the part about “How do I upgrade the BIOS?”. It is much more indepth then my rundown and will give u the confidence to do it. This site says 1008e is out but 1007 will work for u and I have heard form several people about it working flawlessly.

Thanks, Lowlypawn. I did like you suggested and now this system is working the way it should have originally. =)

Now I know where to come when I have some sort of computer problem. You all are much more knowledgeable and considerate that any of the technicians that I have communicated with regarding my issue and all the advice that was freely given to me is greatly appreciated.

Some Technicians give the rest of as a bad name, thats one thing they should have tried...

I love Intel and AMD... Yes I'm a slut...
