After a series of nasty hits this past weekend, the NFL has instituted a new rule that for all intents and purposes states that players delivering "devastating hits" will be suspended. Three players were fined rather harshly for their parts this past weekend, but not suspended (article below). The rule also states that players can be suspend for "helmet-to-heltmet" hits. Prior to this new rule, players were fined for helmet hits and rightfully so. I'm in complete agreement for helment-to-helmet blows, as someone can be seriously injured. However, I'm completely against the rule in regard to suspending players for so called "devastating hits." That's the point of football: To lay a hit on a guy in order to separate him from the ball. All the players in the NFL know this and understand the risks. You've never heard them complaining about it.

It would seem to me that this policy is completely reactionary and looks to cater towards "casual" NFL watchers. Those who have been watching avidly for years do not mind a crushing hit and understand that it is part of the game, no matter how awful it maybe. But the "casual" watchers, those who tune in on Sunday and Monday nights tend to cringe when they see such hits and may be turned off to the game completely. My opinion is that Nanny err Commissioner Goodell is alienating the NFL's cornerstone fan base with this rule and may in fact turn more fans away from the game. If you cannot tell, I'm not a fan of Goodell, as he is micro managing the game into oblivion.

Long story short, I'm not a fan of the new rule and I suspect that a vast majority of the players and fans aren't either.

I just wish we had a NFL team to apply the new rule to and see how it goes. :)

Take it you're not an Oakland Raiders fan, eh?
October 21, 2010 8:20:19 PM

I was a Cardinal fan. Jim Hart, Diedorf, Stallings, Dobler teams and earlier. Raiders were in the Coliseum for a few years, but the owner went back to Oakland. Then the Rams left for St. Louis. So, no team in Southern CA other than the Chargers for many years. You are talking to a guy who watched 'the immaculate reception' live in his parents basement.

Off topic for a moment. The bulls are looking good under new coach Thibodeau. He was the Celtics defense coach. A strong, active 'gang' mentality defense is his forte. Worked very well in Boston. The Bulls are going to do well this year.

Derrick Rose had 20 and the Bulls beat the Toronto Raptors 110-103 in exhibition play Wednesday night, snapping a two-game losing streak.

Rose also had nine assists and eight rebounds.

my comment: Can you say triple double!

Cant remember his last name, but he goes back aways with the Cardinals
Larry......
I believe he was a safety
70s, even late 60s possibly

The St. Louis footbal Cardinals of the 60's and 70's had an owner, Bill Bidwell, who was a cheapskate and would not pay to get the star players. Being a fan of those teams was brutal. Teams like the Cowboys and Stelers with Staubach and Bradshaw killed them. Larry Stallings was a Cardinal player back when. In college, I had a job on Saturdays chauffering cars through an auction. One of the Cardinal players, Jackie Smith, always showed up at the auction. I guess He worked as a car dealer after his career with Dallas/St. Louis.

It's funny how various teams like the Cardinals bolted for the West, but others in the West have bolted for the midwest and such. I'm waiting for the Raiders to bolt as soon as Al Davis dies or sells the team. Ugh...ol' Al use to be a good owner, but I'm afraid that he is behind the times.

I used to keep up with the politics of the NFL, but no longer and for years I have no interest. I know more about the powers of the NBA these days. Note: I will be dumping DISH network frever as soon as my contrac with the company expires. Their mpersonal vendetta against FOX in general disturbes me. DISH network is gone! Oh the power!
October 22, 2010 8:02:35 PM

I assume they are having issues with FOX, which in turn is causing various FOX owned channels not be available? I believe a cable company out east was having an issue with FOX as well, which led to a Yankees playoff game being blacked out.

P.S. Did you catch the story that a man was killed by a shark at Surf Beach today?
October 22, 2010 9:19:34 PM

Missed the story. DISH refuses to air FOX sports due to their claim that FOX sports wants to raise the rate to dish by 50% which is nonsense. I read on a NASDAQ link that DISH is risking losing a lot of their 35 million subscribers by in effect taking away their customer's favorite sports teams. The article went on to say the amount of increase FOX would create per DISH customer is like .75 cents per customer! We have already decide we have had it with DISH and will move on the next chance when the contract expires. My wife and I had to file a complaint with state's Attorney General's office to get DISH to make DISH stop raising our rates as per our contract agereement. Toodaloo DISH. Have a nice life rotting in hell.
October 22, 2010 11:55:38 PM

Makes me wonder, whos the powers that be thatre behind dish?
Not that certain people believe in capitalism heheh
Specially those poor folks in them thar hills, hollowood that is

I was researching Jackie Wilson and came across a bunch of videos from my old neighborhood. One ws great, a theme park my mom used to take me as kid that has long since been torn down. Another of the city hall I lived down the street from. Shot full of bullet holes!

DISH management is from Mars. They are protecting me by allowing FOX to pull the sports package I pay extra for due to FOX's outrageous rate hikes! As composition for my paid subscription, DISH is giving a few channels freee. One of them is Big Ten Football channel. Pinch me! Missouri's Attorney general has already declared DISH's action illegal. 3 million rats in New York city are without their regional sports teams and are threatening to be 'waiting for the kitchen lights to go out!"
October 23, 2010 7:17:58 AM

Ugh, not to go off topic again, but it looks like the NBA is in for a lock out next season. I wouldn't doubt if it were the whole season, especially seeing that Stern wants to cut $700-800 million from salaries (in total) and perhaps contract the league a bit.
October 23, 2010 7:54:28 AM

Exactly. Obama will add saving the NBA to his long list of military acompolishments.
October 23, 2010 8:53:07 AM

LOL, highly doubt that! My point is though that it will take an act of God to take that kind of money away from the over paid, greedy players. What happened to the NHL a few years back is going to happen to the NBA!
October 23, 2010 11:17:04 AM

Obama needs to save Juan Williams first
October 23, 2010 11:50:23 AM

What teenage voters Putin didn't get, Obama will pick them up this mid-term.

Putin was shown holding a readied tranquilizer gun. Then the tiger was down? If you look closely during that time descrepency, Putin is taking a belt on a bottle on vodka and his pants are down. :o
October 24, 2010 8:14:26 PM

Yeah, I'm sure he didn't actually tranq the tiger, but instead got in there for the photo op once it was out. Still though, I can't imagine any American president having the guts to get near a tranquillized tiger, bear, cougar, etc... Then again, I'm sure the Secret Service wouldn't let him.

I agree with that.

Indeed. It's like the NFL has a minor league like the MLB does to test new rules and such out on.

I'm not a fan of this rule either. As a longtime Steeler fan (hense the name) I remember LB Jack Lambert saying after a rulechange about hitting quarterbacks - that they should have to wear dresses. :)

I'm a Oakland fan :) ...But as far as this rule im not a big fan of it. Especially since my favorite part of watching Football is Defense. To me I don't think both sides really understand what a legal hit is. Not sure if you seen the hit by Rolando McClain against Darren Sproles but that hit he did was legit but look devasting at the same time. So with this new rule that hit he made would get him suspended.

Here's the video of that hit by Rolando McClain. As you can see he led wth his shoulders but some people say it's not a legal hit and that he should be fined especially after the reaction of Rolando after the hit. I'm starting to hate these rules by the NFL...

But this 2nd video he should of been fined lol...But damn if he got suspended i'd be so mad!
