You'll need a special version of the boot ROM found here:

http://www.revisionx.com/ki.html

Having done a bunch of these myself (I actually still have 5 more KI
boards
I've found laying around that I still need to make new drives for) I
can
give you the following pointers from my own experience:

1) I've found for whatever reason, this only seems to work out with
Western
Digital 3.5" drives. Damned if I know why, but imaging any other brand
drive
just doesn't seem to work. Maybe someone can chime in something I don't

know.

2) Be sure to REMOVE any "master/slave/cable select" jumpers on the
drive
before firing it up plugged into KI. Having those set in any way almost

always results in the drive not interfacing with the board.

3) You can power the hard drive by either running power wires from the
HD
power connector to your switcher, or you could solder the wires to the
board
edge connector at the top of the pins. I find this to be a bit funky,
however, as it results in the JAMMA harness to not quite fit snugly
onto the
board.

4) It seems quickest and easiest to take your target drive, plug it
into an
IDE port on a Windows box, toss your kinst.chd file into a directory,
get
the LATEST MAME and take its chdman file and toss it in the directory
with
kinst.chd, and then use chdman.exe to dump the .chd directly to the
target
drive. There was an article on RGVAC pointing to the specific command
line
parameters to use not too long ago.

5) You will need to get a special 2.5" to 3.5" IDE adapter to connect
the
drive to the board. My local computer parts shop sells them at an
obscene
$15 a pop, but you can get them on eBay for $7 or $8 shipped all day
long.

6) Use a "regular" old school 40-pin IDE cable - using those fancy
new-fangled Ultra IDE cables won't work.

BTW, as an aside, if anyone happens to have any small (1-3 gig) WD IDE
drives they don't have use for anymore, that likely work, I'd be happy
to
give a few bucks each for 'em. Would like to image the KI boards I have
in
my project pile at some point to make them sellable.
