Digilife has been using the hL2 beta for testing for a while. This is from the newer July Digest, includes more cards and I think newer drivers? They are within a couple fps but the nV's do better on P4's than ATI. Either company could come out on top with the final code. But I doubt either will have a substantial lead in HL2.

Don't even look at the 10x7 benchmarks...it's all CPU limited. Scroll down to the 16x12 benchies and look again, only the 6800UE beats the X800XTpe and the rest follows logically. This is like most other DX9 games...the 6800UE wins, then the XTpe, then the Ultra, GT, X800Pro, old stuff.

This only makes sense, too, considering the pricing.

Oh yeah, it also makes sense that AMD did better than Intel...this is a gaming benchmark  .

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.

How is this bad? Upset about your purchase?

Get over it, this isn't final code and these certainly aren't final drivers. Just think about the power you're saving with the card you're getting (and the high FPS...even if it isn't the absolute highest).

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.

yea i agree, nvidia drivers by default tend to work better, until ATI has had time to do some tweaking. its always been that way

I think this is bad for ATI because since they worked with Valve they should have a pretty good lead over Nvidia and they don't. At 16X12 the 6800 Ultra is in the lead with the X800 XT in second. The problem for ATI is that the 6800 GT is only 5 FPS behind the X800 XT and costs alot less. Nvidia clearly in the lead with opengl games and now neck and neck in directx games...ATI is going to have to drop prices, especially with the X800 Pro. Looks like HL2 will force more people to upgrade than Doom 3 did.

Then I consider that a worse programming than DOOM III for graphics, really. That's my gripe with the good news of systems playing DOOM III, it's JUST Doom III!
You'll get everything else less optimized and thus, while Carmack may be right about the M9000 laptops running DOOM III fairly good, he is nowhere near the truth when you try FarCry minimum quality on such systems.

Sadly, DOOM III is the vision of ideal programming. And that's all it will be for us enthusiasts: THE vision. :frown:

BTW I think so far things have been logical according to your benchmark link.
Notice the 9600XT. It has been maintaining the known lead against the FX5900 (or equalling it). The R300 serie is still holding on to their known reign in HL2. The bigger problem comes when we look beyond. The NV40 is without any doubt more advanced than the R420. Alas, that comes as bad news for ATi. How they will reclaim it though is beyond me. But I don't see much that isn't expected or is surprising from the results so far.

Holy crap the 6800 Ultra OCed doesn't even lose one fraction of a frame from 1024*768 to 1280*1024!

Excuse me though, why is the GT stronger than the Ultra in the first benchmark?

I don't trust these benchmarks at all.
From other benchs we have seen, it shows ati cards clearly in the lead. It is after all, a beta. And we don't even know how far back the beta dates. I think we'll just have to wait and see. But my 9800pro only getting 40fps at 10x7 :frown:

They have FPS with X.0. theres no decimal stuff in any. i dont know if these benchmarks are trust worthy.
u r right, if GT and ultra come from the same fabrication process, that is the chip tech is the same...how can a lower clocked GT beat a higher clocked ultra and then an OCed ultra beats the GT.

Is this beta working on something like a fuc**** bell curve ?

No, that makes no sense. Could be mem/gpu clock ratios?... or just a fluke and they suck at benching. Maybe they only ran it once?

Me: are you saying I can't provide?
Me: cause I know I can provide.
Me: oh and I can provide money too;)
Rachel:): why do we need money when we can just stay in our room and have sex all day?

I don't trust them. The first benchie is <i>obviously</i> just statistical noise (for the top 4 cards at least), there's simply no other possible way the GT would beat the Ultra.

Plus, the GT and the Ultra are neck-and-neck throughout. The only way <i>that</i> could happen is if the game is CPU limited - and if that's the case why does the framerate for those cards drop <i>at all</i> between 1024 and 1600?

As I understand it, the GT and the Ultra are exactly the same, but the Ultra's clocked ~15% higher on the core and 10% higher on the mem. The framerate drops by >15% from 1024 to 1600, so the Ultra should pull out a noticeable lead If you ask me.

it means it is BAD FOR US.
We are the ones spending $1000000 for cards and if we dont get what we ought...its BAD.

I am somewhat suspecting those benchmark because I have the hl2 beta and well i can run it at 1280*1024 2x aa 8x ani with SOLID fps...

Keyword: BETA

Um this beta has been out for at least a year, ive had it for that long.

Doesnt anyone think there may have been some optimizations in the code and espcially the shaders in this timeframe? Most of the hardware being tested is far newer than this beta software we are talking about.

This is just a bunch of hypothetical BS. If you cant wait until the game comes out to get your numbers then you deserve to be mislead.
