The 6800GT seems to be the fairly good buy at the moment, as it's basically a lower clocked 6800Ultra so should overclock to near ultra speeds.

AFAIK, The x800Pro has 4 less pipes than the x800XT as well as lower clock speeds, so is a bit more crippled (compared to the 6800GT Vs Ultra)... BUT it takes up less space, and consumes considerably less power.

Personally, If I was buying now, I'd buy the 6800GT I think - unless it does end up getting really beaten up in Half-life 2. It certainly seems like the performance part for the doomIII engine, (well, the Ultra is, but costs too much for the gain you get over the GT)

The Nvidia cards seem to be the way to go at the moment. There was a Half Life2 benchmark that popped up on the board here recently, some are skeptical of it, but Nvidia stomped ATI in that sites benchmarks.

The 6800 GT is a bit more logical choice right now, just becuase the price jump to the Ultra doesn't equal the jump in performance. You are looking at pretty high-end cards so I assume money isn't a real big issue. Possibly wait and see what happens with the new RivaTuner, seems that a few manufacturer's plain 6800 have disabled pipes. This could possibly save you some money getting the 6800, and soft-modding it to a 6800 GT. But you will have to wait and see which manufacturers have this capability.
