Hi. Im new to these boards. And I have searched this site and its got tons of great info about making the old comp faster and better. Although I got a problem choosing a vid card. I have a 4 yr old vaio comp, and I dont have a big budget to overhaul it that much. Right now Im just doing the vid card (ge force 2 MX) and upgrading my ram (128mb to 256mb). And I have a budget ($150-200 and maybe a few dollars more) and I need some recommendation on which card I should get. I only have one in mind right now: ATI 9800pro, (or even ATI 9800). I have read THGC's guide and the 6800 just cost way too much for me. So I need some suggestions.

edit: Also I forgot to post my computer specs:

1.3ghz P4
128mb rdram(soon to be 256mb)
geforce 2MX(burned out)

:dont know about motherboard

PS. Do all the new video cards work for all motherboards?
Edited by dlin on 08/16/04 07:57 PM.

All AGP cards since the GeForce3 work on YOUR motherboard (as well as some older cards).

1.) Your P4 1.3GHz is VERY weak, in fact a PIII 1.26GHz is likely 30% faster!
2.) 128MB is NOT enough to run WinXP properly. 256MB is barely enough to run it passably. You need RDRAM in PAIRS, you might as well buy a PAIR of 128MB modules and have 384MB total.
3.) I'd fix this machine as cheaply as possible and sell it.

since you don't have a lot of money, the 9800 pro is a good card if you can swing the price. just make sure you get a good brand 256 bit 128mb model. you'd be able to make use of it if/when you got around to building a new system

amd 2000+, gigabyte ga-7va, maxtor 60gb 7200rpm, 512mb samsung pc2700, soundblaster live 5.1, BBA radeon 9600xt 128mb, LG cd-r/rw 48-24-48, antec 550w true control
