Safe Mode Won't Start

I'm running Windows XP Pro, and the systen boots as it should for
a regular mode startup. When I try to boot into safe mode, tho, the
screen shows services being started and then freezes at the last
service, MUP.sys. This happens whether or not I choose Safe Mode with
Network or without.
I have a back-up from a couple of weeks ago but haven't been able
to do one since so I'd rather not resort to this unless absolutely
necessary.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the link.
After searching thru the multitude of different solutions that were
offered, none worked. I finally figured out my problem on my own: In
the Device Manager snap-in, when I clicked on "Show Hidden Devices"
under Non-Plug and Play Drivers I found that the "VgaSave" (VGA Display
Controller) driver had somehow been switched to Manual instead of
System. This fixed the problem.
