I just reinstalled XP home. When I go to windowsupdate, it allowed me to
download the needed updates but as it initilizes to install, the whole
computer freezes. No other programs running, put the site in trusted in IE &
Zone Alarm. Even turned off ZA, which is running the anti virus.

Hello Jim,
Since you mention antivirus, which brand is it? Norton / Symantec?
You mention it freezes at the start of installtion phase. Locate the log file for Windows Updates & take a look in it for "Error" notations.
Look for file WindowsUpdate.log in your C:\Windows folder ( or it may be C:\WINNT on your system).
Use Notepad or Wordpad to open & view contents. Scan down to the very bottom. Copy the set of lines for that last session-date & paste back into a reply in here.
In case your Windows folder is hidden:
Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.
"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.
Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

Zone Alarm is a firewall program. It is not an antivirus program. What other programs are running when & if you go to Windows Updates?
Your log entries do not show an explicit "Error" exception.
