HI,
I currently have a mobile 2500+ @ 2.5 Ghz,ABit AN7,512 ram, 9800 Pro. Im considering upgrading but am confused what to get 1st. Here is what im trying to decide between.
Amd 64 2800+, Chaintech VNF3-250 = $224
or
BFG 6800 GT OC = $400

My current system plays Doom3 at 800x600 High Quality in the 50fps range. The games that i will be playing later on are Half Life 2, LOTR:Battle for Middle Earth. Any advice will help alot. Thanks in advance.

A jump to an A64 2800+ from your AXP @ 2.5GHz is not worth the upgrade. Or should I say, it is barely an upgrade at all.

If you are stable at 2.5GHz, I wouldnt do less than an A64 3200+ if you ever go to upgrade the mobo/cpu. Better yet keep the mobile XP until you can jump to an A64 3500+ S939.

Anyway, that said, in almost any imaginable case, the GF6800GT would make much larger difference than the small A64 2800+ increase would give. No question about it on which is the better upgrade for a gamer.

totally agree. that cpu is wayyy more then enough for games. trust me, i own the exact same setup almost (2.5ghz Xp-M, NF7-S which is the same as the AN7 minus the Uguru overclocking chip). and trust me , my 9800pro is definately the bottleneck in Doom3 Farcry and the HL2 alpha

Thanks for the advice. I was leaning towards the 6800 GT in the 1st place. Just wanted to get some feedback before i spend $400 on another video card.

LOL, I dont look at it as blowing $400. Just an investment in my hobbie. I live in Az and im as white as a ghost because i never go outside. To busy inside messing with computer hardware and gaming (what a life I have).

Make sure the images and colora generated by GF6800 are really that you want.
ATI and Geforce adopt different coloration methodology.

I've bought my Radeon 9000 (non-Pro) 1.5 years ago, and I don't know when I will upgrade this again
