On black coin doors what kinda paint do most of you use. Flat, mat, gloss?
and what Manufacturer?

I have had great results with a paint from Home Depot called Painters
Touch in a semi-gloss finish. It dries quick and seems to emulate the
sheen of the original paint.

Now I use it for control panels and trim too.

I use textured paint and I love the way they come out. However I found a
place that does cheep powder coating so I may start having them painted the
correct way.

Someone once said that using a stone texture paint and then following
up with the color works well. I have tried a Semi gloss from Krylon
and it does just ok. I also tried the texture paint, expensive and
doesn't reallly give the result sought although it is better. I think
on my next metal painting I'm going to try the stone texture and then
a Krylon Semi/Satin. Yup, powder coating is always best. But I'd
really need to pick up an oven and a powder coating kit to do all the
parts I really need to. 50 bucks at least per project on
powdercoating all metal parts can get a little expensive.

That was me. :)

After the stone paint, be sure to sand it down a bit with very fine paper or
it may be too textured for your liking. Then I use Rustoleum 7777 semi-gloss
spray paint. I used the Krylon semi-flat black for years, but now I swear by
the 7777. Goes on nice, has more of a black than dark gray color, and it has
just the right amount of shine. YMMV. :)

Where do you find the Rustoleum 7777? I used the Krylon Semi-Gloss
and have been very happy with it.

My tried and true method was after hammering/dollying out any dents, sanding out
rust, feathering in everything.. prime it up.. then spray a nice wet coat of
Rustoleum Satin Black (this paint is available just about anywhere.) Let dry,
do another one for good measure.

If it's an old Midway door that has the very pronounced texture, I'd let the
initial regular coats dry, then practice away from the door getting the nozzle
on the can pushed down *just far enough* that it starts to spatter, get that
down to a T and then turn it onto the coin door. Spatter it up good. It's not
a perfect match but it looks better than most of those hammered finish paints
I've seen, plus a few times when I've used the hammer finish paint the solvent
base was incompatible with other paints and ugly problems resulted.

Ooops... My bad... 7777 is satin black, not semi-gloss. It's available
everywhere (home depot, lowes, local hardware store, etc.)

One thing I've definitely found over a few years is that the Rustoleum
paint gets in your nose, on your arms and feels really wierd. Like
sticking your hairs together. For you hairless people this isn't a
problem. But the second thing is, it takes an eternity to dry unlike
the Krylon. One good thing about it is it provides a very touph
barrier. I've used Rusoleum machine gray for most of the internal
parts to a cabinet. But yea, Roy I liked your idea. It sounded like
it'd work great for that powdercoated look. I'm going to give it a
whirl on the next project. The bad thing about the textured paint is
#1 the cost, whether it be Harley Davidson paint or something from the
paint shop, it's always $10.00 and above for a single can. By the
time you get a desireable or close match to what your looking for
you've gone through the entire can.

air compresser and and spray gun (harbor freight and homier sell them
cheap)... it'll save you big $$$ in the long run over aerosol cans...

still though... if I don't wear a smask I'm blowing black snot out for a few

yea I've got the compressor and the what pr0k recommended for the air
sprayer. I've never sprayed oil with it though. I'd need to pick up
some more chemicals for the cleanup. I think though that Pr0k
recommended using oils on Williams cabs like Joust and Defender. Not
sure on this. I like going water based for cleanup.
