D: and E: CD-ROM drives disappeared!

I was having some problems with the computer recognizing my iPod, and doing a
repair install from the iPod CD didn't help, so I decided to uninstall iTunes
and then reinstall it from scratch. After running the uninstall option from
the CD, I restarted the computer, and it now appears to have no knowledge of
the CD-ROM drives. They are not displayed in My Computer and the CD-ROM tests
in PC-Doctor for Windows XP failed, not detecting either one. When I put a CD
in the drive, it spins for a little bit, like it is reading the disk, but
nothing else happens.

What can I do?

Remove them from Device manager and reboot, allowing Windows
XP to reinstall them..

Then if that still does not work...

Do NOT be afraid of the registry hack here.
It is SAFE and has helped MANY people.
Respect the registry, don't fear it.

1) Log on with Administrative Privileges

2) Open the Registry Editor:
a) Go to Start then select Run.
b) Type regedit and click OK.

3) Backup you registry by:
a) Highlight My Computer by clicking on it once.
b) Click File (Windows XP) or Registry (Windows 2000), then Export
Registry File.
c) Select export range All; to ensure your entire registry is backed up
completely.
d) Select where you would like to save this backup, name the File, and
Click on the SAVE button.

4) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

5) Restart your computer.

Or try this:

http://www.dougknox.com/

Select 'Windows Utilities' and scroll down to 'Restore CD/DVD drives to
Windows Explorer.'
Perhaps his utility will do the trick. =)

If that does not work, you might consider a system restore to a time before
you installed the "application"...

The regedit worked. Thank you so much for your help. Now I have another
question =O I think the start of all these problems goes back to when I had
to do a nondestructive recovery from HP's backup partition after I
accidentaly deleted an important driver. My main concern is that I am fairly
sure that it was restored to the original build, and not SP2. However when I
go to the Windows update site to download it, or anything for that matter, it
reads "Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software..." and
then sits there, doing nothing. I'm pretty sure that Automatic Updates isn't
working right either.
