Does anyone know where I can find information on configuring a Netgear RT314 router? The user guide and resource CD cover the basics but are terrible for the advanced features. I mainly need to know which ports to open and which to close for maximum security.

Thanks

I got a Linksys 4 port router in my apt. The ports it lists as well known ones are

7(Echo)
21 (FTP)
23 (TELNET)
25 (SMTP)
53 (DNS)
79 (finger)
80 (HTTP)
110 (POP3)
119 (NNTP)
161 (SNMP)
162 (SNMP Trap)

hope that helps out.

By default the router has no ports being forwarded to any of your internal ip's, so by default you don't have to worry about what ports to close since you don't have any open. As to what ports to open, that depends on what exactly your going to be using. Do you have a mail server, ftp, http etc.? Are you going to pe using pcanywhere or netmeeting?

It's for my home network. I'm only going to be using it for internet, but since I'm going to have an "always on" connection, I wanted the router to be another layer of defense in addition to the firewall software.
It gives me the option of configuring up to 10 ports. I was wondering if I could make my network more secure by configuring those extra ports.

If you do not need to open the ports for apps, don't.
Thats what is going to give you the extra security. The only time you need to forward/open a port is if you need it open, ie. ftp server.
Hope that helps.
