u didn't tell u r upgrading ur comp or not...if u r there are lots of new breed of cards both from nvidia and ATI which are available in PCIe falvours as well as AGP 8x...if u r buying the the card to play DOOM3 then this link might help u.....

http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQy

moreover THG in this section gives u excellent digest to all the cards available ...with the high-end cards available in both 8x and PCIex ...i think the best bet is 6800gt if u want to last it for 12 to 24 months...its overclocking capability is also very impressive.

i m doomed!!!

They definately are rare and the faster ones are sometimes almost double the list price. <A HREF="http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/simprod.asp?pid=9621&ad=pwatch" target="_new">Rediculous EXAMPLE</A>

The 6600GT should be available soon and is expected to be a good performer for the price. ($200)

I believe ATI <A HREF="http://www.ati.com/companyinfo/press/2004/4771.html" target="_new">sold their 1 millionth PCIe card</A> last week.

Thats a huge number, but sold to WHO ??? is the question...US/Canada isnt getting much of the shipment. Considering all the TOP OEMs/AIBs are in Asia, those dudes will be getting a lot.

Neither are we getting AGP !

sorry its a bit of a story so i left the "upgrade or new pc" out, but here it the short of it. ive got to give up my machinge and i've got a p4 3ghz 478 and 1 gig of pc3200 sittin around. so far i was under the impression i could slap that in with pci express but after more research im not so sure. so the next step is finding a mobo thats compatible with the p4 ive got and pci express. i just cant see paying $400 for an agp card that if i go to upgrade my mobo and cpu in a year that i wont be able to use.

That processor will not work in any intel chipset board with pci express. The only intel boards that support pci express need an s775 p4.
edit: and not to forget that you would also need DDR2 memory.

Actually I saw ALOT of X600s (and X300s) in Toronto when I was going from shop to shop. They aren't rare, but there's still not much demand for them. BTW, HP also uses the X300 in alot of it's new rigs (first place I saw the X300 appear).

They really aren't that rare for the mid and low end, but I didn't see single X800 or GF6800 PCIe card in the whole area (about 20 computer stores in about 2 blocks [really just the strip on College for 2 block lengths west of Spadina]).

Some of the new 775 boards are DDR + DDR2, so the DDR2 could wait.

last thought then... any idea as to when amd64 with pcie will make its way to retail? and is that gonna be a 939 chip or somethin else?

I'd like to see a link. I just checked out Abit's site, and found nothing in their socket 478 line-up. It sure would be nice, and let alot of people ease into PCIe.

I think I'd buy a cheap 2.4C just to transition for a test (cheaper than everything new while they debate standards/availability and fix prescott issues).

Edit; Well you edited your second post since I saw it. PCIe will likely only appear on Socket all three AMD 64 sockets, but with socket 940 being likely Opteron-centric boards, the 754 boards likely getting them after the 939 solutions.

Expect them in the fall.

i don't see where it says it's socket 478, and if you go back to the motherboards page it isn't on there.

the above anadtech link i posted is of today....so i guess those chipsets pt890 arent out yet but will be soon. for the same reason abit hasnt updated its mobo list, but just showed the product for comparison.

In another story, IBM is planning on making dual core powerpc970fx aka G5, based on 65nm. they say theyll be the 1st one to roll out 65nm (though intel has already demonstrated its 65nm tech)
Also IBM will be making triple core powerpcs for xbox2....and i dont know y i m posting this cpu junk in the graphics forum.

The chart/matrix shows it, but not their actual Mobo page;

<A HREF="http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/" target="_new">http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/</A>

For the socket 478 it lists the ones below, no VG7.

VIA PT880 DDR VT7
VIA PT800 DDR VI7
Intel® 865PE/PL/G DDR IS7-G IS7 IS7-E IS7-M
AI7 IS7-E2
Intel® 875P DDR IC7-G IC7-MAX3 IC7
Intel® 848P DDR IS7-V IS7-V2
Intel® 845PE DDR BH7 IT7-MAX2 V2.0 BE7 BE7-RAID BE7-G
BE7-S BH7-E BH-71 BE7II
Intel® 845E/D DDR IT7-MAX2 IT7 BD7II BD7II-RAID BD7III
Intel® 845G/GE DDR BG7 BG7E BG-71
Intel® 845 DDR BD7 BD7-RAID BD7m
SiS Chipset DDR SG-72 SG-71 SR7-8X SA7
Intel® 865G/GV DDR IS-10 IS-20

But it's nice to see that there is a solution as such, the question is how readily available is it, especially if it isn't even part of their current mobo list?

Prototype pic here at THG. Not a huge via fan compared to i875/i865pe, but hey lets see some in depth reviews. Looks interesting.

yeah you said/posted it as I was replying to the original.

Anywhoo, so be it. Planning it and having it are two different things unfortunately. But it is nice to see there is a mid-way solution for some. If it were out now I'd buy one for a reasonable price, but if it's out in a month or two then I'll already be piecing together the 939 rig so there's no point.

But nice to see a little backwards support for people who realize that a 3.2 GHZ p4 HT is ok for a while.
