have been leaning towards the 6800 because i hear they use newer technology and are better bang for buck with relation to overclocking and pipelines, on the other hand the x800 is supposed to run faster with AA and AF turned up and can have all 16 pipelines enabled if a vivo model.

So can anyone say what is going to be respected as the better card in like 12 months time when more games have been released. My last purchase was a nVidia just before DX9 was released and the fx i purchased went from being a good thing to pretty much useless compared to the ATI equivilant. So what would you guys recommend.

cheers

I would say the GT. The X800 Pro is an awesome card, but lets take a look at both cards Pros and Cons.
X800 Pro
Pros:Very fast with AA and Aniso, built on the proven 9800 cores, has 3DC, Could be modded to use all 16(but remember that not even all of the Vivo cards worked, its more a chance, and slim)
Cons:Has only 12 pipelines, is only faster than the GT in a few cases, mainly at 1600x1200 with AA and Aniso. AA quality is "supposedly" slightly lower than nvidia, but i can't notice a diff. (if you mod it you void warranty, if you just oc and it frys, you may be able to send it in still)
Gefroce6800 GT
Pros:Extremely fast for the money, has all 16 pipelines, can beat the X800 XT in Open GL games like Doom3 and is close to X800 XT in Far Cry, its tyed with the Pro in HL2.
Cons:not any faster than X800 Pro in HL2(this is only based on beta tests, may change in future), no games actually support PS 3.0 and Vertex Shader 3.0 yet (far Cry patch 1.2 was recalled).

BFG and Visiontek both offer lifetime warranties, so if you go with Nvidia i suggest BFG and if you go for ATi i suggest Visiontek. Both companies are known for their good ocing cards.

Dont get the x800pro, my friend has it...cannot run doom3 in 1280 with good fps.

The 6800gt is the best bang for the buck at the moment.

An egg is realy only just liquid chicken.

The GT is a good choice, but seriously one game does not determine a card. D3 is good, but I doubt it's replayability will be that much and games based on the engine won't be so intensive IMO.

In any case the GT is still the best all around value, but it's because of more than just one game.

Its not gauranteed to get the extra 4 pipes, and the GT can go to ultra speeds.

The GT can go to Ultra a lot easier than the Pro can go to XT.

The way I see it is...if you play both Doom 3 and HL2. The margin that the GT beats the pro in Doom 3 more than makes up for the tiny margin the pro beats the GT in HL2.

Unless of course you don't play D3, in which case it's irrelevant. Really there are enough benchmarks out there that people should be looking for themselves. The GT is good, and it does take a majority of the games, but there are still holes in it's performance, and the thing is to make sure they aren't the holes in the the games you play. Just like the X800XT is better in more games than the GF6800U right now, but there are areas the GF6800U pullss ahead too, so the thing is to make sure you're not buying it just for a game you play for 20-40 hours and then never again.

I agree the GT is more likely to OC to Ultra than the Pro is to mod to XT, but the GT OC'ing to Ultra is also questionable in alot of cases, ESPECIALLY in shder/fragment heavy games like D3. The GT does not have the extra power, and often lacks sufficient cooling to run the top games all the time at Ultra speeds.
