This has become a really big issue in recent years - check out the number of posts regarding 128bit versus 256bit memory on the Radeon 9800 - and many customers buying the wrong thing because of poor labelling etc...

I don't see why we can't go back to the way the VooDoo brand was labelled - ie 3000, 3500, 4500, 6000 etc... Simple and effective - bigger number = better performance. No "Special 9800" (Pro, XT, NU) and then normal 9800. We have gone the same way with CPUs as well - different FSB speeds and amounts of cache for the same chip - we all know that they have different codenames like T'Bird / Barton etc... but finding out what models are being sold is not easy on most websites.

Who is with me in championing numbers instead of letters? Nvidia did it to a certain extent with the FX line - the 5900 was superceeded by the 5950 which was better but they still had many flavours in their range with different memory speeds etc...

4.77MHz to 4.0GHz in 10 years. Imagine the space year 2020 :)

You people just wait until they start giving full control to the(prefered) card-makers.
"The Asus XXX800XTV6, now with a 64-bit memory bandwith, giving you the graphic experience..." you get the picture.

And then the n00bs going "Why is my card so slow? It says right on the box it's 64 BITS!"

Right up there with "A CD is more expensive because it has digital 'incoding', duh."

Such cheat sheets are well needed these days.

He doesn't even touch on the R9800PRo 256bit/128bit issue or the FX5900 XT/LE/SE/EPV/ED/etc.

But it's about time someone said it I guess.
