Hey Gang...I remember a while back there was a few of the Nvidia chipsets that has some terrible performance issues. They came out after the GeForce 4 series.

Can anyone pls refresh me on what it was? I am looking for a new card and don't want to get burned.

Thanks ALL!

Anything with either FX or the number that starts with 5xxx, stay away from them in everything but Doom3, and even then they aren't impressive enough to overcome their other shortcomings.

The new line (6xxx) is far better, and then try and figure out price/performance to guage a winner.

Do you have any budget? This will also help us to guide you to the best solution for your wallet!

Just note that today's the minimum for decent gaming is a Radeon 9600 PRO. Anything slower is not powerful enough to last you long!

when are you going to upgrade line 3 of your sig then?
I know I have an aging GPU, but it is enough for my needs. I'm not an extrme gamer. I can even run Doom3 in 8x6 at medium quality with this setup! So, I don't bother much upgrading.

In fact, I mostly bought a 256bit 9800SE to soft-mod it to 9800PRO a month ago, but it is impossible to find the model I want in Canada and most USA online store don't ship in Canada!

And since I'm only planning to play World Of WarCraft in a neat future, I don't need a new card. A friend of mine is in the WoW stress test he have a GeForce TI 4200 and he run the game at 16x12 in high quality. So, my Radeon 8500 will be more than enough for this game.

The only reson why I might upgrade sooner is Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike Source.

lol, just playing with your last statement about the 9600 Pro being a minimum. I have an 8500 and a couple 8500le's floating around and for most games they do just fine. Shoot, most racing games I play, the 8500's remain completely playable at 1280x1024, so they are sweet for our LAN racing. Newer games may need 800x600 med/low, but hey it still works.

I know that 8500 are not bad at all! Check my signature! But I can't recommend Radeon 9000/9200 or GeForce FX 5200 to people that want to enjoy games for quite some times. My statement is for new systems, if you buy new parts you can't expect to be satified with a 9200 or a 5200. It's true that they can still be enough for most games. But playing FarCry, Doom 3 and eventually Half-Life brings these cards to their knees. My overclocked 8500 is doing fairly well in FarCry and Doom 3 for a 3 year's old card. But, I know that I don't enjoy these games at their full visual potential. I had the chance to see both games on better systems and I know that my 8500 is lagging and nearly dead.

It is why, I always recommend a minimum of a Radeon 9600 PRO for people that want to play games on their NEW system. These cards are fairly cheap right now, they have good HQ and their support DirectX 9.0.
