Right-click on the desktop, choose "Arrange Icons By", and you'll see the default options on the menu. Try "Modified", and see if that is satisfactory.
Personally, I don't even keep icons on the desktop these days. It just causes clutter, and obscures whatever picture I'm using as wallpaper. Instead, I keep my most frequently used program icons on the Quick Launch toolbar, and hide any other icons, like My Computer, etc. I've got 20 icons on the toolbar, and anything else I use for quick access is directly on the Start button menu, like the DirectX Diagnostic, the Command Line, Computer Management, Group Policy Editor, and the Registry Editor. You can arrange the icons on the Quick Launch toolbar in whatever order you prefer.
