Hi,
Im thinking of upgrading my video card and i have decided upon the Visiontek X800 XT PE. My main concern is that the rest of my system will be to much of a bottleneck for this card. My system consists of the following, AXP 3200+, Abit AN7, 512mb ram in DC with a 480 watt TT psu. ANy and all advice and comments will go a long way as $500 is alot for 1 piece of hardware. Before I forget ill be playing games like D3, HL2, EQ2, LOTR:Battle for Middle Earth to name afew. Thanks in advance.

mayb double the ram, thats it...rest seems fine. also use less modules, 2 instead of 4 if u doble.

Yes i was planning on getting 1 gig of pc3200 just trying to figure out if I should get video card 1st or ram. I'm leaning towards the video card right now as I really wanna crank these rez's up on my games, but the 9600 pro is hold me back.

GeForce 6800GT is almost as fast as X800 XT PE, but costs significantly less.

I recommend getting GeForce 6800GT

I have been considering the 6800 GT, but i have some doubts about its performance with AA/AF on. With this new card I want to run high rez with AA/AF on(I intend to make this $400-$500 piece of hardware work the money i spent on it off). The other thing is I really like the image quality on this 9600 Pro and I know the 6800 series has improved its IQ but has it improved it to the point of the ATI cards. Thanks for the info so far, hope there is more to come.

When looking at the AF optimizations you have to compare the latest drivers from nV (65.xx and above) because the 61.xx and 62.xx have filtering optimisations which have since been removed by default (you can still enable them).

While both have their optimisations nV had two different optimisations working at the same time, while the x800 had the one. Now nV has reduced their optimizations also to just one by default and the others can be turned on later. So if you're worried about AA/AF figures be sure to check the 65.xx drivers and above.

But really the GF6800GT is a good deal if you're looking for value. For raw speed, then it depends on the games, and from your list, D3 would likely play better on the GF6800series (Ultra tops likely), and HL2 would likely play better on the X800XT, but if you can wait, wait until at least the official HL2 numbers are out.

The X800 may play better in games to come (i.e. HL2). Do you play a lot of OpenGL based games? If not, dont jump on the 6800GT bandwagon just yet.

Well i looked around a little bit today and I think i might get the 6800 GT. I found on EAgames that LOTR:Battle for Middle Earth will have some 9.0C effects in it(plus for 6800 series). I also found out that EQII is being optimized for the NV40 chipset. Now the real question is which 6800 GT board maker to go with. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

if u have decided on a geforce gt, and have money, BFG is the one u shld go in for. a lot of nv board makes questions in the first 2-3 pages of the forum. u might see stuff there.

I havent decided completly yet. I am still looking at some benchmarks and getting peoples feelings about both cards. So far though the main games im planning on playing are being geared towards the NV40 chipset.

As far as RAM or Video Card, my opinion is video card first. Really both cards would give you great performance. Personally I have a 6800, and its not even a GT and I have no problems playing at high resolutions (1600x1200) with AA/AF on.

The savings by getting the 6800GT could be used for new RAM. Anyways my choice would be the 6800GT
