Flashing a 9800 pro

I plan on building my first computer in the next few weeks and I've heard a lot of talk on the New Egg reviews about flashing ATI 9800 pros to 9800 XTs, and 9800s to 9800 pros.

Is there any truth to this? Are these modded cards just as stable?

I'm sure this has been beat to death earlier in the forums but I searched back 20 pages by myself and found nothing then tried to build in search engine still nothing.

If you've had success with this post your brand, any mods to the card, and benchmarks if possible.
