The InQ says no more nV integrated graphics.

<A HREF="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=18413" target="_new">http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=18413</A>

While most of us would say big deal, I'm interested in a DX9 class IGP even if it is crappy and I rarely use it. Just the idea of greater than GMA900 graphics for just a few bucks more as a back-up or potentially for surround-view is intriguing.

I wonder if there's anything to the concept of their being design issues, but really if it was going to be based on the FX cores anyways, maybe skipping it isn't a bad idea. I doubt it makes much difference anyways, Intel still dominates the market and everyone else fights for the scraps, maybe it's just not profitable.

In the end for most of us the figures of the chipset with an add-in card are more important than the idea of a 'back-up' chip. Also likely people are more interested in having the SoundStorm technology than having an FX5600/5200 class IGP.

Flamethrower isnt going to be happy about this.

I mark this as an end of an era, that didnt even get to be an era....the end of something, that had the potential for being something great, but didnt quite make it.

I feel sad:(

When I used to work at best buy, many consumers found the integrated GF4 MX440s found on nearly all the Athlon XP HPs and Compaqs a big step up from the Celeron based models sporting the Intel Extreme(-ly crappy) onboard solutions.

Guess it will be up to SiS and ATi to step up. While I am RMA-ing my 9800 PRO, im currently running on Intel Extreme 2 on board......its driving me nuts.

"Who is General Failure, and why is he reading my drive?"
P4 3.0C HT, Intel D865GBF, 1GB Crucial PC3200 DDR, 2x WD 36GB Raptor 10kRPM, BBA Radeon 9800PRO, SB Audigy, Hauppage WinTV

The funny thing is the GMA900 (aka Intel Extreme 3) is actually a nice chip for people who don't game much. Basic hardware DX9/PS2.0 features (VS done in software), quality ramdacs that can drive and HD display. Frame rates in games equivalent to an R9200SE/FX5200SE (and sometimes better than both).

Sure I wouldn't recommend one to anyone gaming more than just once a month (on old titles), but for the person who's main concern is home videos/photgraphy and maybe an occasional Flight Sim or Solo Quake3 round, this will likely do them fine, and just like the FX5200SE they will get access to those nice DX9 effects even if it looks like a slide show.

However the idea of an R9600 class chip onboard is nice, especially if it offers other features, and if it gives me something to troubleshoot F'ups with (not that any of us do that! ).

EDIT: Also just noticed <A HREF="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=18500" target="_new">THIS at the InQ</A>, Intel think the GBA..errr, GMA900 is ready for D3!

Why on Earth are drivers needed to test the GMA900 in D3 is beyond me. Why hasn't anyone just tested it yet anyways? It's a supposed DX9 class card, so why the heck not try it, it HAS to work in D3.

Well it may have to do with the software Vertex Shader part. It's not hardware vertex shading so drivers likely have a big impact on performance.

Anywhoo, it's still funny.

<i>"Why does my Intel Extreme 3 only get 4fps in D3 @ 640x480-LOW."</i>

Well, kid it's because it's <b>Extreme</b>ly crappy @ gaming, just like all the others.

Looks like there's a new way to define 'playable' with regards to <A HREF="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=18512" target="_new">the GMA900 and D3</A>

And yes, Yes I do wuv the word Anywhooo (extra o's to emphasize it wasn't a typo), and I've been saying it forever and a day. My own invention (at least to me) long long before it became trendy (seems ever since Norm said Anywhooo on Cheers). I also say Ciaola, another personal creation and fav. So be it.

thats actually an insult to D3, 15-20 FPS under any reso/mode is too less. Whats the use of the game then, like D3 is basically about graphics and the thrill which comes from the envireoment. Under that FPS, all we are playing is D1
