I have decided to switch to a 9800 pro, but I do not know what kind to get. Could someone steer me in the right direction? Which ones can you flash to xt? 256 or 128? I have seen a lot from sapphire. Is that kind any good. Anyones help would be greatly appreciated.

If you want an XT, then buy an XT.
Buying a good 9800Pro, with the sole purpose of flashing it's bios, is really stupid IMHO...

I dont know. I am just looking for a really good 200.00 card that will play most games with no lag. I currently have a 5700 ultra that everbody says is crap, and the card doesnt perform as well as a 9800, so as to what I am told.

Like who?
Whoever told you that needs to stfu. I had an eVGA 5700U that did 1,200Mhz on it's memory....really impressive.
If you want to correctly spend $200 dollars on a new card, then waite till the 6600GT hits retail.....trust me.

I was told that the one I have which is already clocked at 500 core and 1000 memory doesnt compare to the ati 9800 pro because mine only has 128 bits and not 256 also, only 4 pipelines and not 8 like the ati.

You are correct about your card only having a 128bit memory bus, in comparison to a 9800's 256bit bus. And yes, it does make a difference.

I'm telling you though....$200 will buy you something much better than a 9800Pro real soon.

Go for the HIS Exalibur 9800pro. Great HSF which leaves rrom for OCING and maybe flashing to XT.

I am in the same situation as you; I have an old 8500LE and want to upgrade. However I decided to wait a couple of months; both ATI (X700) and NVIDIA (6600 (GT)) are coming with new cards in the $200 range based on new architectures. Hopefully that will result in a price cut for the 'older' cards or you might get better performance for your $200.

If you need a $200 card now, obviously the 9800 Pro is it. Blows away 5700U and 5900XT. But upgrading from either to a 9800 pro isn't wise now unless you have use for the spare card now.

But if you can get by with your card and wait for this 6600GT and X700 to come out in AGP, that's a smart choice. Just be prepared to wait a while. IMHO, mid october is a best case scenario. I'd guess you should be prepared to wait until late November as officially AGP versions haven't been announced even.

Yeah, the company I bought the 5700 from has given me store credit to exchange it for a 9800 pro. The 9800 should be just fine for me to play all the games that I need to play for a while. Hell you start getting into it and you are never satisfied. Being used to playstation and x box types, I was just amazed at the graphic quality of pc games. The 9800 for a midrange user has got to be the way to go. But thanks all for clarifing the 128 bits vs. the 256 bits and the 8 pipelines instead of just 4 because their are so many different cards sporting their own gimmicks you get completely lost.

Yes, I also planned to go for a 9800pro and now I decided to wait a while for a 6600GT or X700. I won't have much time to spend on gaming before Xmas anyway.

Your 5700U should be enough to keep you happy until you can get an AGP 6600GT or X700. The only problem is that nVidia and ATi have been clandestine about the release dates for the AGP versions of those boards.

If you want the 9800 Pro 128Mb, I recommend Built-By-ATi retail box. I have a problem with my Sapphire and I regret not going with a retail card.
