Loss of ADSL connection

I have an ADSL USB connection ( Sagem 800 modem ) that worked fine till
yesterday. Now, after a while, it not only disconnects but, at the same
time, the connection itself gets DELETED from the list of connections, thus
removing username and password.
Every time I therefore have to uninstall the ADSL USB WAN drivers and then
reinstall them. I must have done this at least 10 times and frustration is
mounting. When it is functioning and I am using the phone I can hear some
beeps at regular intervals. Right now I have disconnected the traditional
dialup modem (56K) that sometimes I use as an alternate connection.
a.. The modem is OK, because my son's laptop connects fine for hours on
end, at a different location, through the usual filter, which I also have.
Anybody have any suggestions ??
