Catalyst AI investigated by Hanners @ EB

Good little look. Too bad the D3 images are too offset to see true differences. The Foliage in the SS-SE is the noticeable difference to me but even then it too a while to check all of it.

Take a look and see what you think.

To me optimize all you want, as long as I cant turn it off and on and it has minimal if not no impact on IQ.
Also be sure Reviewers know what they're doing too.
That's my two frames worth.

is it simple enough to say that DISABLING AI, will give us the highest image quality, or maybe the original image quality (just as the developer wanted us to see) at the cost of FPS ?

True, but neither ATI nor nVidia were doing this before, and turning off their optimizations costs FPS on both.

So yeah, if you think the minor differences, which in many examples are only noticeable with mathematical difference tests, aren't that bad the boost in FPS may be worth it for actual gameplay, but not for benchmarking. The biggest thing that most of us have asked for is simply control, and they listened, and it ONLY took a YEAR AND A FREAKIN' HALF!

Man, guess I better get my remove the bloatware request in now, so it can be part of the 2006 release. :lol:

I was wondering when you were going to post this :lol:

Reverend from B3D(who I dislike) has been hinting around for weeks that this feature was going to be released. I hate it when those guys play these guessing games.

I'm really stoked to see this option/feature become a reality.
Just as long as it isnt for X*** series only:rolleyes:

I hope it works on R300 class because the performance boost in Doom would be greatly appreciated. If the Humus mod works on R300 then the AI substitutions should work too... I hope...

but we gotta see if they work together ! ie AI and HUMUS mod. Note that ATI hasnt made any official announcement wrt HUMUS mod, but their AI stuff is using the same kind of optimizations. So we have to see that they work together or not and if at all there any change with or without each.

Well Humus works for ATI, so it may work very well, or else I think he'd add an update himself.

Well see, however if it's already incorporated then no need to worry about them owrking together.

As for the Anand review, it's ok for simply showing FPS, but also another example of why I don't trust their reviews as there seems to be an overall direction they like to lead their readers.

This line in particular caught me in the review (more than just the spelling mistake :wink: );

<font color=blue>"(becuase ATI is using 24bit precision math, which no one else uses)."</font color=blue>

Now this bothers me for a few reasons;

a) Either it's redundant (ATI only does it for ATI) which I doubt is what they meant.

b) Or it's ignorant of the facts either willfully or otherwise.

c) Or they've been steered in that direction by other interests.

<A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/s3-deltachrome_3.html" target="_new">As you can see here XGI (despite all their faults) also uses FP24</A>, and at the very least that means it isn't "No One" even if it is not a great gaming impact. Well really how many others are there in this field, for add-ins that's basically half of the market and 2 of the 3 DX9+ hardware designs.

But of course that doesn't sound so dramatic and perhaps they'd need to actually do some work to come up with something else to discount AI, perhaps something like research. This isn't the first time that's been an issue.

It's nothing to shout from the rooftops about- I gained about 0.9 FPS. It's more dramatic on the X800 cards, but they're already getting high FPS so who cares. Anyway I don't think you can apply it because you have an R200 class card.

I wish to find out a kick ass hack for my Radeon 8500... But, actually, I don't care much since I don't play Doom 3 at all and most of my friends and co-workers don't play Doom 3 at all. Almost everyone says : "Wow! Beautiful, but boring game play over time...".
