Hi peeps, not posted in here for a while but wonderde if anyone could advise if a Sapphire X800XT Platinum 256MB DDR3 VIVO (AGP) version would be wasted on the following system:
XP2800 (Barton)
1Gb PC2700 (crucial but nothing special)
120Gb Western Ditital HDD (8Mb) + 60Gb Seagate Barracuda (2Mb)
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe (Rev 1.0)
Antec Trupower 550W

Thanks for any (constructive) advice!

heya Caim;

Nah man it will run like a champ, in some of the more advanced games like Farcry and Doom3, you will be CPU limited but for the most part it will work just fine, no need to run out and upgrade your core just yet.

yea i agree with what everone else said, even tho your cpu isnt the fastest, these new games require MUCH more video card than cpu

i don't remember where i read it, but a X800 won't provide a big performance boost over a 9800Pro on XP chips..
not to say that X800 is bad or his system is not enough, but juat another question?

HMMM. Wonder how that mobo does with the Mobile Xp's? Anyone know? That Crucial may OC ok, but if not, if the mobo has good voltage adjustment and muliplier settings, maybe a 2.3+ GHz Mobile Xp2500+ would be a nice addition to that $500+ video card. At that point, What's an extra $100 right? Is 200-300 MHZ worth it? Could sell the XP2800+ for as much. Is that Barton 2800+ unlocked? Have you OC'ed it?

A Few reviews from FiringSquad on CPU Scaling;

While it's an X800XT PCIe and an X800Pro AGP in the tests it should give you an idea of CPU/VPU limitations.

From experience, I just got rid of a 2600, it was just getting over 40 000 in aquamark with my x800xt on that CPU, not even close to the true potential. You can get that with a 9800xt if I'm correct. Even if it isn't fully utilizied at least it'll be great when you do upgrade your core.

Athlon 64-fx 53, socket 939
K8N Neo 2 Platinum
Sapphire X800XT 256 meg
1 Gig OCZ PC 3200 Dual DDR Platinum Rev 2
Aquamark 69 280
Trying to figure out what it all does.

Looking at FiringSquads latest, looks like you'll be just fine for HL2. At the resolutions/settings you'll want to play with a X800XT, there isn't a huge difference in performance between AXP, P4, or A64. Low res sure there is a big difference, but realistic playable settings not much different.

Aquamark might not PLAY as good, but HL2 his rig won't play that much worse than yours at 1600x1200 with high AA/AF.(with a X800XT you better be using those settings.) :wink:

I still want to see the full released game benched, not just VST and CS/Source. But not bad considering the raw power difference of the two cpu's.

I pull 45,000 in AquaMark3 (Free version, so no tweaking) with a 2800+ XP and a plain 6800. Obvisuly your x800xt should have been at least this, if not more. I pull 56,600 with some overclocking.

Get the x800xt, your system really isn't that bad.

Also note, that my 2800+ 2.6 ghz, on air cooling. With some overclocking (maybe some new ram), you could really have your system moving.

With my new CPU I crack 69 000 no OC. I was just stating the diff I found the lesser CPU made. I was only getting 2/3 out of it in terms of benchmark performance. Not much better than a 9800 xt.

You'll notice in those FiringSquad tests that the CPU limiting occurs at the lower-ish resolutions, but in all the games the X800 Pro is very fast and you can expect the X800XT to be significantly faster than that, even on the 2800+ XP.

Wow, thanks for the informative and positive response...I know the "How will this work with this" type questions can on the nerves of some of the forum veterens, but I dont often ask them. Your advice is appreciated!

I think I may Just get one after Xmas - Availability and price should be a little better by then too! + Paying for my forthcomming Holiday to the US has branded me poor until Jan. I may look into a Athlon 64 early in the new year (Socket 939 is they way to go i believe?).

One final thing...Seems I may get a bit more out of the old dog yet by OC'ING - i have oc'd my graphics card in the past but not my CPU or memory - is there an idiots guide to OC'ing that requires no strenuous use of math for multipliers etc ;-). I have no doubt that I could find one easily and am not being lazy, Just ask in case people know of a particularly good one.

Thanks once again!

increase your FSB in even intervals of approx 6-12Mhz and OC till it hurts then back off some, you may find you are ram or chipset limited at a certain point.
