I've noticed that I got some crap that I don't want on my computer but when I send it to the trash it says access is denied file is in use blah blah blah blah. There is nothing in the unistall folder of one program and so I'm stuck with it now. HOW DO I GET RID OF IT??? It doesn't appear on the add/remove programs. Thanks.

You are better to use <A HREF="http://www.macecraft.com/" target="_new">jv16 PowerTools</A> to clean the registry.

You've got to be careful with those third-party tools for Registry cleaning, xyz. I've seen utilities like this wreck a system and render it unbootable. I had it happen recently to me, using RegScrubXP, and I recall having a similar problem with Regcleanr in the past. They are pretty useful for manually removing orphaned keys (if you are careful), but the automated Registry cleaning process can have devastating results.

Not really, but then again, I haven't done that much experimenting with these types of apps for several years ... not since I could rely on an image for OS restoration. I used to like the Registry repair feature that came bundled with Norton Utilities, but I haven't used that since I was running Win98SE.

However, I did use RegScrubXP a couple of weeks ago when I had some Registry corruption after yanking out a codec (just for the heck of it), and it made a huge mess, so I can at least recommend not using this to repair damage. And while I've been using the jv16 tools for a long time to manually remove Registry keys after uninstalling a program, I learned very quickly that the automated process was not up to speed.

Perhaps someone else can contribute a suggestion or two towards a utility that actually works without causing more problems than it supposedly fixes.
